Northern Illinois University Nursing Fall 2015 Applicants

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I've applied to Northern Illinois University for the nursing program. I'm waiting to hear back from them. I am a current NIU student. I applied last year as a transfer and was denied. I'm hoping to make it in this year. I have finished all my prereqs and my GPA is a 3.39. I'm not sure that is good enough.

I applied to Rockford University also. I was accepted there for Fall 2015 but NIU is my first choice. Is anyone else waiting to hear from NIU? Do any past applicants have some insight?

From what it seems (by looking at threads from the years before) current students should be finding out in about 2-3 weeks. Help!

If you don't mind, how did you get accepted into nursing straight out from high school? Did you finish high school and applied right away to NIU and they gave a decision right on the spot? Or how does that work? Does NIU have any partnership with certain high schools ?:wideyed:

If you apply to NIU straight out of high school and declare your major as Pre-Nursing before February 15 of your Senior Year then you get entered into the "early acceptance consideration". They take 20-25 students (out of about 2500). It's based on GPA and ACT score. If you are accepted early, you have a spot reserved for you in the program for your sophomore year! It's pretty awesome and I'm very lucky.

Nice if they do care about the GPA. I have a 4.0 GPA and I also work full time and I do volunteer work at a hospital. It would suck if I wouldn't get accepted. Since the total number of students accepted in the program is 200 (100 in the fall, 100 in the spring), do you know how many transfer students they accept? I asked because you mentioned that NIU takes a limited number of transfer students.

Honestly I've heard that they really only care about GPA. If you have 4.0, I would say your chances are pretty dang awesome!!! I'm not sure on the number of transfers they take, but your GPA is very competitive :)

But I still don't understand why did you get to find out about this admission decision before anyone else? The rest of us are supposed to find out their decision somewhere by mid-April or so... anyway, good for you! The rest of us are still freaking out until we know their decision.

So from the moment you submitted your application how long did it take you until you found out about their decision?

For those who aren't accepted "early", they still have to apply in February and find out with everyone else. We found out if we were accepted early or not last summer. Not sure why NIU has early admission for select incoming freshmen. I know that Bradley, SIU-E, and ISU also have early admission for a few select high schoolers :) It is a bit odd!

I submitted my application in August 2013 and found out in May 2014. This is not the normal guidelines though. It is only this way for the 20 high school students they accept. For traditional admission I heard you find out mid April!

Ok, thanks! Now it makes more sense. Your situation is completely different than mine. I submitted my application last year in August, but since I already have a foreign bachelor degree it took a while to have everything in order (getting the original transcripts/having them evaluated...blah blah blah) and then I took the reading comprehension exam in February. Anyway, all in all I am in the same boat with those who are waiting for NIU's decision...hopefully by mid-April we'll find out:up:

Also, I believe that you already went through the orientation process. I'm waiting to hear back from them though before I go through that. I haven't even responded to their honor program yet because if I don't get accepted for nursing, there's no point for me attending NIU...I live in the city and it's a long time to drive to and from the college (but if I get into nursing, commuting would be the last thing I would worry about). However, I would love to hear how the orientation process went. What did you learn? How long did it last? Any inputs, anything about it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm part of NIU's Honors Program as well- I love it!! I actually don't have my orientation for another three weeks or so :) It's a little weird, but they want to wait til after school ends.

As far as you getting into the program- I think you have an awesome shot :) You'll have to let me know the moment you find out!!

Looking forward to hearing from them soon!:nailbiting:

Hi! Im at oakton community college and I applied to NIU's nursing as a transfer student. Have you heard back yet? And what was your pre req GPA when you applied to the nursing program when you were a transfer student? I plan on doing the same thing if I don't get into the program - being a health and sciences student and trying again but I just wanted to know if that is a good idea if I do take that route if I don't make it into the nursing program. Thanks
