Norfolk/Hampton Roads

Hello,

I'll be interviewing at Sentara Heart Hospital next week and I'd like to do some apartment hunting while I'm in the area. I'm from out of state and don't know if Norfolk has areas that are nicer to live in or ones that should be avoided. Any input would be appreciated!

Hello!

Welcome to Hampton Roads!

You asked about apartments here in the area...

I am by no means an expert, but I would recommend trying to stay near Norfolk, if you are going to work at the heart hospital. The commutes through the tunnels and over the bridges are brutal! Downtown Norfolk ( near the hospital) is not too bad of an area, but expensive (you need to really search for the deals). I would probably recommend looking in the Bayview or Wards Corner area.

I suspect there are some bargains to be found in renting a condo in Ghent (the hospital's neighborhood -- very nice, but usually pricey) and in downtown Norfolk (very near the hospital).

There has been a dramatic over-building of condos in the last 2 years and many people trying to sell condos cannot get them sold. I suspect that many of those people would be happy to either sell at a lower price than you would expect and/or rent their places out for a year or two at a lower than expected price. Until the market picks up again -- it's a buyer's (and renter's) market.

That's a very good idea! Thanks!
