I don't intend this to be an ad or spam, but I like to share what has worked well for me. I know you said you don't like scrub pants, I hate the traditional/plain/basic ones. However, I'm a big fella, and I need comfy pants with utility, and jeans don't fly where I work. I use one particular model of Landau's scrub bottoms to great satisfaction. They have cargo pockets, a wide elastic waistband, zipper AND a drawstring, with pockets galore(6 or 7, I think). Front, back, and cargo. I order them from scrubshopper.com, they're a decent deal there, free shipping if you order over $100. Here's a link to the page for those pants: Landau Cargo Pant
Now, if you're a REAL man, get yourself a Utilikilt in your uniform color.
I have been using the Cherokee brand cargo style scrub pants (the "model" number is the Cherokee 4000 pant) and they are awesome. Plenty of cargo/utility pockets on the side, still retain a back pocket and regular side pockets, loops in cargo pockets for scissors or other tools, and also include a zipper fly. Comfy material and all the "features" a guy could ask for. Highly recommended. In my area they run about $25/pair at most uniform stores. Not sure if you could score a better deal online, though.
Original poster here. Levis 505's (bright white) don't look like jeans if you're wearing a scrub top to cover the top of the jeans (why? all the jean identifying material is in the top couple of inches of the pants). They appear to be generic white pants. And they are actually comfortable.
Side note: in my area (South Florida), I have never seen the use of jeans (any color) being used in any medical setting whatsoever.

Can't you tell by the side seam, though?

I hate scrubs. The scrub top is tolerable, but the polyester blend limited pocket drawstring bottoms drive me crazy.
Anyhow, many of the uniform codes (usually written with women in mind) offer a white pants/skirt, w/ white shoes option to scrubs. So my work uniform has been similar to my t-shirt and 505 jeans home uniform--only difference being that I use white 505 jeans/running shoes for work, and throw a generic colored scrub top over my t-shirt. Not crazy about white, but at least it's comfortable, with pockets and a fly. So far, nobody has ever said anything. I guess it looks nursey enough.
However, I just discovered that Levis has discontinued their "bright white" 501/505 (possibly others) jeans. I googled, and managed to snag enough pairs off E-Bay to launch me into retirement, but thought I'd alert anyone else who wants to get last crack at workaday Levis as a nursing uniform.
