Non Nursing job suggestions needed for former OB RN

Published

I worked in obstetrical nursing for several years, and now work in the Pharmaceutical industry. I don't really like my current job (data management) and want to branch into something else. I thought the best people to ask for suggestions regarding job ideas would be other nurses. Does anyone have any suggestions for a career change that will use my medical/nursing background?

I don't mind getting some additional training or education (I am a diploma grad)- but ideally I would like something that wouldn't be like starting over. I considered ultrasonography, but I have heard that job prospects are pretty slim for this and that finding a reputable school is not easy.

I have not kept my license current, so another plus would be not having to renew my nursing license (its been many years since it expired).

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks :)

I am anxious to hear your replies.... I think it may also be limited to what might be available in your area where you live. Maybe former RN's don't read these posts? You will land on your feet and hopefully running in your new career soon!

I want replies! I am 30+ years in OB/L&D and the 12 hr shifts are getting very difficult physically!

ok, hon! you have people skills. you WILL need to go back to school, because labourers are the first ones to be laid off. People will SKILLS get the jobs, but they have to sell themselves.

Massive layoffs are in effect, so dont get too cocky or over self confident about getting a job, but capitalize on your talking/communicating skills

market yourself. And SMILE!

You seem like you're lost in a snow drift.

The first or one of the first things perhaps to do is to sit down and think of why you have left two or will leave two jobs.

Why didn't you like OB-GYN?

What are the positives to each one and then the negatives.

Unfortiunately the baggage that you carry is a heavy load.

Perhaps renewing your licence would be the best thing to do first. In doing that you may find some concrete ideas on what you may like to do.

Think hard and you will find the answer.

true, now where is that shovel!

your possess people skills. since the job market is uneasy these days, there will always be SICK PEOPLE.

patronize it. but get the damn license back.

and this time, KEEP IT. you never know when you may need it.

I kept mine, its good as a backup.

I hate shift work, but the free food is great.

sometimes the patients make up for the bad shift.

I would think you would have to get at least a bachelors in health care admin or something like that, but I hope others have some ideas that would be better for you.

Do you hate what you are doing now? Why? That might give some insight into what you may enjoy doing more....

I am a bachelor's nurse and have worked a myriad of jobs. I have worked on med/surg as a shift nurse, in a nursing home (very difficult trying to medicate 30 patients at the same time. I currently work as a visiting nurse, and deal with the mentally ill population as well as medical co-morbidities. I work mornings and make my own schedule. I only have to report to the office to drop off paperwork and occasional meetings. It usually takes me a few hours of work in the morning and then I can take my paperwork home to do. It's wonderful and the money is great! I've never made so much without having to feel burnt out : )

If you don't care to renew your license, consider delivering non-medical home care for the senior population. I have friends who are NOT nurses or healthcare workers, but have developed a VERY successful non-medical business. These types of service are popping up everywhere. At first, my friend was actually the one going into senior's homes to assist with doctor appointments, light housekeeping, occasional grocery shopping, companionship ....etc.

She got so many calls to do this for other clients that she needed to hire people to help.

It then morphed into a full-fledged home care company. Her qualifications.....years of caring for her own family including her elderly mother. She is insured/bonded and licensed with the department of health. She has inspired me to create my own business. There's lots of free help out there in the small business administrations to help guide you.
