I'm seeing job postings for a non-exempt contract position at a unionized hospital. I understand the non-exempt part, but does the "contractual" imply a set time limit? I was under the impression that the hospital would just hire travelers/agency for that. Forgive my ignorance on this - can someone explain?

A non-exempt position at a union hospital has already been agree upon by the union to allow "outside contractors" (applications) "bid" (apply) for the position. Usually for the union to allow for "outside contractors" onto the "job site" (facility) it is a temporary measure and therefore for a limited time period. Most agencies remain expensive and unless the facility utilize them regularly and sign a contract with the agency to provide an consistent supply of nurses....can be costly.
It may also be due to the union to keep agencies out of a facility as most agencies require a contract these days (at least where I'm at) that promises a minimal usage of their personnel and a no cancel or no float clause. Some facilities believe that if hired as an employee, even temporary, fosters better performance and loyalty than an agency nurse.
I hope thos helped....let us know!
That helps a lot - thank you! I have an interview for one of these positions at a hospital that's 20 minutes from my house, instead of the 2+ hours I'm driving now. I'm hoping that if I get my foot in the door, this might turn into something more long-term. Thanks again for the explanation!
