our ob unit has just stopped doing vbacs. now all previous c-sections will be repeats and those showing up in labor (unless precipping in the bed) will be stat sections.

apparently anesthesia is tired of having to stay in house for them and the obs are, too. they were constantly grumbling among themselves... but she's your patient, you told her you'd do the vbac, not me... yada, yada, yada... :nono:

if doc's did more to prevent the primary c-section, this wouldn't be so bad - but with all the social inductions and sections for ftp (aka. failure to be patient) and cpd (aka. couldn't produce a real diagnosis), the future for lady partsl birth around here looks grim. :o

where are the feminists when you need them. :chair:

I am with you on that 100%, Oz.

If women & families felt more empowered to say 'no' to things that aren't necessary (and they KNOW aren't necessary), I think we'd see a big shift in birth processes here. We (I mean women and society as a whole) have been fooled into thinking that modern=better and you & I both know that's not always so. Women have been birthing babies for thousands of years without continuous EFM, Pit, AROM, and elective c/s. (to name a few!)

I do not do L/D but I get some of these new mums postpartum and it saddens me to see how their birth experiences have been mucked around with by 'technology' when they would've been just fine had they been allowed to do their thing.

You are right. We as nurses have a part in it too. Good labor support and advocating for our patients go a LONG way. I will say that, in spite of the above, I am fortunate to work with a few very talented labor nurses who do a lot to save their pts from unnecessary interventions.
