No experience to 10 patients per shift?! CNA

Nursing Students CNA/MA

hi guys

I just got hired today. I got hired through a middle man agency that sends me to (2) different facilities. I am instructed to show up 15 minutes early the first day so the charge nurse can show me around...

That is all the training for that facility that I am going to get! Then I just have to jump in. My employer also said I am going to have up to ten patients! WOW during my CNA training we were assigned to take care of our ONE patient and then help out our class mates when we were finished. Of course I knew we would get like 5/6 patients, but 10! Makes me feel defeated before I even begin. Is it normal to have these discouraging feelings for a first time medical worker??? I mean I am so excited, I just do not want to let myself down or anyone else for that matter.

comments please?

It just takes time to feel comfortable. I am a new CNA and was thrown on the floor with 16 patients! So imagine the stress I went through, although its only temporary. I have been a CNA for only a month and I am just beginning to feel like I can somewhat breathe while i'm at work. I still make mistakes and need help with things sometimes. It's okay though and don't let it discourage you because eventually you will feel more competent as time goes on. Good luck to you.

Ok, breathe and calm down. On my 2nd day of orientation, one girl got sick, and they gave me her assignments, 8 whole rooms with 15 pts to myself. I'm a brand new CNA. If I can get through it, you can too. I almost had a heart attack when they told me. I wasn't ready to be on my own yet. I survived. Thank god!! Lol. But you'll be fine. You actually got clinicals, I challenged the test, so I didn't really get to learn any hands-on skills.

I was still on orientation @ a job last month, but they had a call-out and I was sent to a floor that I had never been to. Sadly its a part of the game. Don't be afraid to ask the nurses & other aides for help..they will understand since you are new. And hang in there..things get easier :)

Specializes in 6 yrs LTC, 1 yr MedSurg, Wound Care.

You are brave! Lol I applied at an agency straight out of class and was sick to my stomach afterwards because I didn't know anything about the job other than class & clinicals, and class life and work life are two very different things. Luckily, I found a job in LTC shortly after and never had to work agency. Looking back, I'm glad I didn't because there is a lot to learn. I know that isn't very supportive, I'm sorry. :)

Your feelings are completely valid. Starting any new job is hard, regardless of the field. Just do your best and get through the day. Tomorrow you can start agin fresh. Let us know if you have any questions. I'm more than happy to help if I can!!
