I have a BSN degree from India. I have started CGFNS CES process and I am required to send a passing score in toefl/ielts. When I called CGFNS customer service, they said I need a toefl with 26/30 in speaking section. Since I am residing in NJ, am I eligible to exempt english proficiency requirement?

PS. I called BON NJ many times but no luck speaking to the customer service representative.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Residing in the state doesn't mean English exams will be waivered. You really need to speak to the BON. We have had members with green cards still have to sit and pass English exam for the state when they require it so same may be said for your state

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

NJ does not waive English proficiency for overseas nurses simply because you now live in NJ. Effective spoken, written, reading, and comprehension of the English language is necessary for safe nursing practice.

You can take TOEFL or IELTS.

thanks for your reply. Since the textbooks I read and the instructions I followed were in english, I don't have problem reading/writing/speaking in English. I want to take my NCLEX soon and want to focus only on this at the present moment thats why I don't want to waste my valuable time in unnecessary stuff like toefl or ielts.

NJ regulations to not offer the option to be exempted from demonstrating English language proficiency due to use of English texts in a foreign nurse education program. Some states do, NJ is not one of them
