I have a friend that traveled there...she said it was beautiful and all, but after about 2 months she was going nuts. She said everything was so expensive that she would go to the Mainland about once a month to shop for stuff. She also said public transportion was a pain and finally bought a moped to get around. She also found that she was treated rudely by many of the native Hawaiians.
On the upside, she said that she saw lots of interesting things as they fly kids in from all the islands in the Pacific and Japan. She was on Oahu.

I traveled to Hawaii, 6 months on Oahu. Verrry interesting. Pts from all over the pacific, things I'll never see again unless SDak becomes tropical. I found the people lovely and warm, but haoles (white people like me) are the low guys on the social scene. That was good for me, I learned a lot about how it feels to be judged based only on the color of my skin. If you go with lots of money and an open mind it can be a great place.
