NICU Specialty

Published

Although I am currently finishing up my pre-req's prior to applying for nursing school, I wanted to grasp a little insight on how to go about making things happen once I do become an RN. My passion is babies. I simply adore everything that has to do with pregnancy, L&D, nursery, etc.

I have infertility and would also love to work with Reproductive Endocrinology if I had the opportunity.

After graduation, how would I go about getting into a unit that specializes in those areas?? What steps should be taken to get into a specific specialty nursing program and how competitive is it to get into those programs?? Thanks in advance!! :D

Hi LunaHawk,

There is no such thing as a "specialty nursing program", as all RN programs in the U.S. train you to become a generalist. To start the trek toward your dream, you will need to be admitted to a regular nursing program, and as you probably know, they are competitive; so keep your pre-requisite grades as high as possible.

As far as specialty…I have not heard of reproductive endocrinology as an acute hospital unit. To me, that sounds like an outpatient clinic type setting. If you really want to end up in that, or L/D, nursery, or NICU, I would secure a position as a tech or CNA on one of those units. Work hard and prove yourself, and you will likely find they reward you with an RN job upon graduation. That is what I have done for myself, and I am grateful for the opportunity I now have. That's a shortcut to working with babies ASAP. Hope this helped.

Ahhh ok didn't know that!! thank you!!
