NICU Preceptor

So I'll start off with a little background. During my OB clinical I had the opportunity to spend a day in the nicu and I loved it! The nursing director approached me and gave me her business card and said that if my school will let me do my last semester practicum with them they will possibly hire me as a new grad, depending on how it goes. Well I just found out I have been assigned a preceptor in the nicu on the night shift! I'm am beyond excited and I really want to make a good impression. Any tips or advice from current nicu nurses? Anything I should read or study beforehand? I really want to take full advantage of this opportunity! Thanks in advance!

That is awesome that you can do your practicum in the NICU! It had always been my goal to work in a NICU, but my school did not allow us to pick our practicum area. I got hired as a new graduate jnto a level 3 NICU and am so excited, I start next week! I would feel much more prepared if I had my practicum in the NICU.

I have gotten two textbooks that I have been reading since I found out I got the NICU position. Merenstein and Garner Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care and Core Curriculum For Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing. I highly recommend these books as they are great resources.

Good luck with your practicum, I am sure you will have a great experience!
