NG tube help!

They didn't even give you a step-by-step of the procedures?? Have they demonstrated them in class? We use Clinical Nursing Skills: Basic to Advanced Skills by Smith, Duell, & Martin, in addition to school-specific material. It's a pretty good reference, has pictures, as well as step-by-step guidance. It also comes with a CD. You can probably find one on Amazon.

Hey, nope they don't even demonstrate anything for us! They take roll call and then we are on our own for the whole class period! They don't even come in the back (Lab room) to help us or make sure we are doing things right... I'm learning more at clinicals from the Nurses and Nursing Aids then I am from my lab instructors...

Our instructors demonstrate procedures once in class, then it's up to us whether we practice them with our guides or not. They are available to help though. Has anyone approached them about this? It's kind of ridiculous to never demonstrate a procedure such an NG tube insertion and then test someone on it. I'm assuming this is all brand new to you (I only say that bc I'm a LPN in a bridge program). I would definitely look into getting the book I mentioned. It covers everything from bed baths, documentation, delegation to central line care and more. It's kind of expensive, but I'm sure there's more clinical guides out there if that one doesn't work.

Find it and watch it on youtube.com I get most of my education from that site. Sounds like you will have to also. Good luck. Your school sounds as bad as mine. Thanks GOD I am in my last semester before preceptorship.

In my school, we have demonstration in lab where the instructors walk us through how to do the procedure (NG tubes were one of the procedures we covered). Then we have to log 1 hour outside of class time in the lab practicing w/our lab partner (you have to sign in, so they make sure you get your time in). Then we have a skill check off where we have to do the procedure by ourselves in front on an instructor (on our state-of-the-art mannequins :)). You don't get any hints, and if you don't pass your skill checks, you don't pass the class.

If you don't have help, I've heard youtube.com is a great place to get demos - even my instructors have told us this. Good luck!

Hey Everyone!

My first semester of Nursing school is going amazing! I've been in clinicals for two weeks now and I only have 3 weeks left of my first semester after this week is over... I have not had time for anything but reading, studying and homework since starting Nursing school. I'm usually reading from the time I get up till the time I go to sleep, when I'm not in class... I've been so exhausted that I've been going to sleep at like 7ish... How is everyone else doing?

I have a quick question. I'm doing a group project on inserting a Nasogastric tube and I can't find any information anywhere on what to educate the patient on (What patient education do you do when you have to insert a NG tube?) ... None of the instructors will help us or even show us the proper procedure for anything that we need to know how to do... We have to teach ourselves the procedures we need to know for our finals... And our final case won't be decided until we walk in the door on the last day... We'll either have to do a NG tube insertion, Ostomy, Enema, Enteral feeding tube insertion, wound change, or there is another one... Does anyone know where I can find a step by step for those procedures?

Any info will be greatly appreciated!

The only pt teaching tip I can think of for NG tubes is the pt must keep the head of the bed at 30 degrees or more to prevent refluxed liquids from being aspirated. The tube will hold open the valve at the top of the patients stomach, so it will be impossible to keep the stomach contents from leaking out. If they are upright at all times everything should stay where it is supposed to!
