NFLP loan repayment--has anyone had trouble after graduation?

Hi there. So I am applying to a DNP program at a very reputable and expensive college. I am considering applying for the Nurse Faculty Loan, where the govt will repay 85% of the loan if you work for 4 years as full time faculty. I am just wondering if anyone who has done this could tell me their experience? I am afraid that I won't find a job as faculty once I am finished and will have to repay a huge amount of $$$!!! I wouldn't even consider spending this much for tuition if this program wasn't available. However, I am hoping to teach as my own children start college in a few years to help offset the cost of their own college--and the DNP track I will do is in nursing education. It is a good fit, just costly without the NFLP!

Thanks in advance.

Many nursing schools will not hire DNPs as tenured faculty. If you have your heart set on teaching, and you definitely need loan repayment to pay for the degree, I would strongly recommend doing PhD instead.

Yes, I am actually now enrolled in the dual PhD/DNP program so hopefully that will help,my job prospects once I'm done!

Are you open to relocation for a teaching position or a long commute? My University has offered the NFLP since 2006, and we have seen the opportunity for loan cancellation if you are open to moving where the jobs may be. It is hard to know precisely where the open positions will be in the year you complete the DNP program. Be open to the possibility that you might not get a fulltime job offer in your town.
