NewYork Presbyterian ED interview

Published

Hi Everyone!

I have an upcoming interview at NYP's Columbia campus for their Emergency Department =D I've worked as a med-surg/ED float RN (new grad) and am now working in a busy ambulatory center as a pre-op/OR/PACU RN.

Can anyone tell me what to expect as far as questions go, the interview experience and overall process? I want to be 100000000 % ready; this is a dream/goal I've been waiting to reach. I've started making a document on different scenarios/questions that may potentially be asked.

Anyone work at this ED or campus that can shed light on the culture/ work environment?

Thank you!

mercy

I don't work at this campus. However, I always heard people saying how bad this campus is. Everybody works like a robot, and not caring at all. High ratio 1:15?? The area is supper ghetto. Again, these are people's mouth and never got validated. Which ED did you float to? If you could survive at the EDs of the city hospital, then I think you will be fine. To be honest, even the experienced ED nurses would avoid this campus as I known.

I worked at a busy Level II trauma center in Newark, NJ. I'm used to the culture they see at the Columbia campus of NYP, it doesn't bother me.

Interview went well, they called me to complete the skillsurvey references step the day after, now it's just waiting for an offer.. or not.

Do you work for NYP at another campus? If so, how do you like working for them? I've applied to their Cornell and Lower Manhattan campuses as well, but they interviewed me for the Columbia campus first.

btw, thanks for responding :)

I work at CHONY so can only speak to our environment, but the ER RNs seem to worked like dogs. The area around the West campus can be a little dodgy at night, but otherwise it's like any other part of Manhattan that isn't Midtown. Not sure what that other commenter was on about, but maybe they don't get out much.

NYP as a whole definitely has its issues and can be understaffed, just like any other hospital. I've learned a ton here that I wouldn't have learned at a smaller healthcare system. Pros and cons :) If you have more specific questions, let me know! But I can really only speak for CHONY.

Let us know if you get the job. Did you get a tour at the ED? What did you see?

I did get the job and I'm going to take it. I need this experience for the doctoral program I'm going to be applying for (and hopefully getting into) and I'm used to working in dodgy areas (I worked in Newark, NJ straight out of school and previously in a area of Jersey City, NJ that most people would step foot in).. that part doesn't scare me.

I just hope the journey is worth it. As many hospitals, the pros and cons are there.

but if any other information can be offered of the hospital and the system, I'd greatly appreciate it'!

thanks guys! ❤️

Hello, I’m really hoping you got the job and accepted ? . How is the overall feel of NYP/Columbia campus? How is the area? And what are the places you’d suggest for someone working there to live without breaking bank? I have an interview for BMT RN at NYP/Columbia and I’m just hoping to hear something from someone who’s familiar with the campus or who works there. Thank you in advance ?

Worked for years for NYP,and yes they like to tighten the screws on the nurses, they do not make accommodations except for their own administration,RNs are on the bottom of their concerns, they are all about PR and media reputation, they handle the teams at Yankee stadium, pay for the TV program Call the Midwife, while the staff works short.

You might like the area ,pick up new experience,Columbia campus has a high Dominican population, how is your spanish? It is not Ghetto, but it used to be a gorgeous hospital before all those horrid additions and detours. They do have a fancy section for the super rich with piano and gourmet meals, the Mayor used to end up there alot, the areas uptown from it like Riverdale are ok,stay north of broadway until after 242 st.Riverside dr is ok,fort washington ave, they will steal your radio though, the GW bridge is there on 190 st and bus terminal, housing in New jersey like Englewood Cliffs , is ok ,not sure about Jersey city anymore.

They are unionized NYSNA,(in this campus)which is a very weak union and nurses there have been called ,: "90,000 dollar a year pill pushers, pillow plumpers " by the CEO.

Good luck
