Newly Diagnosed With Seizures

Published

I'm just starting out on a medical floor at an academic hospital, and have just been diagnosed with seizures. I have not been prescribed any medication to manage them, and have to wait a few months to see a seizure specialist because my Neurologist wants further testing in order to treat them. I'm nervous to work as an RN with this, as they are so unstable. Should I wait to start until they are under control?

I think it depends what type of seizures you have and how often they happen. Also, when you are diagnosed with a seizure disorder a lot of times doctors want to place you in an epilepsy unit at a hospital where you stay for a week or more so they can monitor the seizures 24/7 and figure out the next steps. I personally have epilepsy and wasn't diagnosed until I was an adult. When I was diagnosed the doctor told me not to drive or work until after I stayed in the epilepsy unit and they could figure out my seizures more. I ended up staying in the epilepsy unit for 2 weeks.

How often are you seizing?  What kind of seizures are you having?  As a person who was having numerous seizures a day until we could get them controlled, I would say no working.  It took me several years to get them under control.  I was missing a lot of things even with my absence seizures.  I was NOT working as a nurse, but in another field.

I guess my other question is how were you diagnosed?

You need to ask your PCP or preferably your neurologist for a professional opinion about this. It is very reasonable to expect that you would be appropriately educated about the current situation of waiting including what activities you should or shouldn't do in the interim.

I hope you are able to get answers soon. Hang in there...?
