I have an interview coming up this week for newborn nursery. I've been a RN for 1.5 years mainly with adult patients. I am extremely nervous about interview especially since it will be a panel interview. I have an idea of what the questions will be like, but I'm not to sure what to say when they ask why newborn nursery? Truthful answer would be related to me having a change of heart in nursing shortly after I went into preterm labor and my daughter passed away several days later. Would that be inappropriate to mention???

I know this is old but I don't think so. I think employers like to see passion and genuine interest in their interviewee for a certain speciality...ultimately those people are more willing and open to learn and grow on the unit ...naturally, because you're interested in it and passionate about it. I know I may have a shot at a med surg position soon if I get the job ...while I'll be soooo happy to be in the hospital and not home health, and while I'm sure I'll learn and thrive and maybe even kinda like what I'm doing ...I'm positive that when I make it to nicu since that is my goal, I'll probably be the BEST version of a nurse I can be because I'm actually interested and passionate and excited about the speciality.
So yes! Be honest about what draws you to the unit!
