New Zealand Registration

just a very quick note. hi my name is Jenny, 38 years of age, married from the Philippines and i am an accountant by profession. I shifted gears into nursing and hope to graduate with a degree come March of next year.

I somehow see bice's point of not having to take up local boards here in our country. Our local regulatory board somehow has lost its integrity and for me to take it here will prove futile.

So I thought, why not take some training leading to registration in NewZealand, a country of my dreams! If anyone could advise me how and share the possibilities of training in Newzealand leading to registration as a nurse without having to be a licensed nurse here in the Phililppines. I understand that my status would be a student? or enrolled nurse?

Blessings to everyone! Jenny:heartbeat

Hi Jenny

Can I suggest that you contact a number of tertiary providers (eg universities and polytechnics)in NZ? Discuss with Head of Nursing studies about what you can get cross credited. You do realise that NZ has a 'State Finals' exam which you will need to pass to be eligible to be registered. In Australia, the universities have done away with these exams. If you attain a nursing qualification in Australia, you will not have any problems getting registration in NZ.

the TRANS TASMAN MUTUAL RECOGNITION ACT enables you to practice nursing in Australia or New Zealand once you are Reg. Nurse in one of either the 2.

The best way is still to have a license from the Philippines first before going to New Zealand rather than doing the Student Visa path. It is more affordable and economical to complete the requirements once you have the degree and license than studying in NZ.(tuition fee cost, living allowance, house rent, books etc.)

Interested Party suggestion is precisely on the spot, that is for you to inquire at the Universities in NZ for Nursing Course tuition fee.

Thank you for all your replies. They have been very helpful. I now know which direction to take. Blessings! Jenny

Hi! I am interested to work as a nurse in NZ.I am an RN here in the Phils. I already passed english test. So, where do I start? Is it necessary to look for an agency or apply directly to the BON of NZ for registration? Please, I need your advise. TY!!!

Jenny

Like other posters I would advice you to be a registered nurse in Philippines first before considering migration. If applying for Australia, RN's are in the demand profession list, you either apply as independent skilled migrant, hospital sponsored, or regional sponsored (check DIMA website). You have to apply/register with the state's nursing council. As overseas RN, you have to undergo 6 months post registration in the university as prerequisite for registration (check each state's website for the recent requirements). You can however, work as assistant in nursing (AIN) or enrolled nurse while doing this to help with your expenses. I work in Queensland and you can download Queensland Nursing Council’s (QNC) application package and competency assessment in their website. Whichever path you choose, prepare to invest time, research and resources. While preparing for the board exam, you can prepare for the IELTS (requires academic tests with overall score of 7), get a hospital job, google for Australian hospitals willing to sponsor overseas RNs. I suggest Australian public hospitals in remote/rural areas willing to sponsor foreign-trained but work-ready RN’s (check Queensland Health or any state website). If I’m right, DIMA’s age requirement is

Hi Samjohns!

2 years ago, i applied and got myself assessed as an accountant in Australia. I hired the services of Imelda Argel, an immigration lawyer in Sydney for consultations, still, i was short of 5 points. I ventured into nursing, and I love it so far. I hope to graduate in March of next year, God willing and have been setting my sights for Australia or New Zealand.

Your advise has been very, very helpful. I have learned that i have to undergo a 6-month training program. I thought it was only for 7 to 8 weeks for assessment purposes. I am definitely looking into that. I also understand that Australia offers better opportunities in terms of economics and lifestyle. In fact, about 2 years ago likewise, my husband, applied for a job vacancy as a Minister of Religion somewhere in Queensland, near Brisbane, but the church preferred Australian residents at that time.

Thank you, thank you for giving me a piece of your advise! I will be asking for more in the future. AT least now, my steps have direction.

Blessings!

If you wish not to take the local licensure board, US is the fastest way for you. All you have to do is pass NCLEX-RN and you will have a licensed to practice nursing. What have you got to loose, you're still studying arent you? Once you graduated in March 2007 the retrogression would soon be over and you can proceed with your plans to migrate.

Australia and New Zealand is not the affordable ways to go. the 7 to 8 weeks training is only available in Sydney, New South Wales. Im not sure if there's any other state that does the same. I have posted details of the OQN Program somewhere in this forum but still they require your local license from the Philippines.

Here's the link:

hi lavalin!

thanx for the link. I am looking into regional sponsored migration. I have a friend in East Orange who is also a nurse and recommended to follow this route. I will be in touch. Thanks again.

Jen

I would agree with Lavalin. Most Philippine graduate RN’s would rather work in US than anywhere else for several reasons e.g. nursing curriculum and licensure exams are patterned after U.S., exchange rate is more favourable, more opportunities, etc.

You’ll spend more money and time in Australia before you get your RN registration due to additional extraneous competency requirements vs work-ready Philippine RN applying for U.S. By the way, for Australia-graduate RN, regardless of work experience one has to do extra education for maternal nursing, paediatric nursing, mental health nursing, etc. to meet the U.S. nursing academic and clinical hours requirements, and before one can apply for CGFNS or NCLEX/state board exam. Also, with current changes to the European Union’s guidelines, all non-EU’s applicants like Australian RN’s are now required to take IELTS before applying for registration to EU countries like UK.

Hope this helps with your life changing decision!!

USA is third on my priority list. In case Australia and New Zealand will not work out, we are definitely heading off to the USA. Thanks!
