HI!

Looks like we are in the same boat. Im from Los Angeles, CA and im starting a job with Weill Cornell in the burn ICU unit Dec. 19. I am with Cross Country and I absolutely love them already. Not having any travel experience, but I do registry, and only 1.5 years of ICU experience here at USC, some hospitals in Manhattan wouldnt take me. I have the best team of recruiters who believed in my skills and experience and pushed for this dream-come-true job.

Some things my recruiter told me...

NY esp. NY pres (cornell, columbia, alan pavilion) are snobby. You will have to pull your own weight and prove yourself for awhile. I have bought AACN books to freshen up on my pathophys and theory so Im prepared when I go. I would also appreciate any advice.

Here in LA, things are laid back. Even though I work in a very acute unit, I wear my hair down, cute scrub pants and just a tee-shirt and danskos. I can get away with it bc i have proven myself to be a smart nurse. But I know when I go to cornell, my hair will be up in a ponytail and ill have my matching 2 piece scrub outfit. We will already be judged on our skills b/c we are travelers. I dont want to give them any other reason to judge me for. Thats MY advice.

I worked at NYP Cornell as a traveler and it was possibly the least snobby place that I have been at.

I found the staff and HOs quite nice and very pleasant to deal with.

You want bad attitude, especially from ancillary staff and management, try BIMC lower East.

Personalities are all relative in how you view them. Im glad you had a great experience there! Ive spoken to many Docs here at USC- most of them from NY. They had similar things to say about "attitude" in NY. Its nice to hear you had a different experience. ...Looking forward to it either way!

I worked in the PACU at NYP. The staff is the best and I was expecting the worst. There are like 3 snobby nurses but overall the staff was great. You will absolutely love it at this hospital. It is also an excellent facility. You will love it. I am also with Cross Country

Every place you go is going to have its downfalls, however I wouldn't let that worry me too much. I started off working in a "snobby" hospital and I think I will be able to adjust if in fact that is the case, but I don't care, I am more excited with just being in NYC as should you! Just keep a positive attitude and do you thing and don't sweat the small stuff.

oh and i enjoy cross country as well, my recruiter has been totally cool and very responsive. keep in touch and let me know how things work out for you.
