NYC Nursing Students - a little lost

U.S.A. New York

I'll try to keep it short and to the point.

I applied to my school's (laguardia comm. college, CUNY) nursing program in the Spring semester for entrance into the Fall. Needless to say, they lost and never received my application and it is too late to do anything about it. Right now I have a 2.9 cumulative, but have all A- in my sciences except Chemistry where I received a C-. So I am now weighing my options.

My plan originally was to enter the Nursing program in the Fall (I have a 3.7 GPA towards my school's nursing program), and finish up my last three remaining pre reqs which are English 102, Microbio, and Developmental Psych during the 6 week semesters (summer and winter).

But, now because of this situation, I am now considering just taking those last three pre reqs during the Fall 2016 semester and transfer out to a 4 year in the Spring semester and go straight for a BSN.

Some colleges I am considering are LIU-Brooklyn, Molloy, NYIT, York College, Adelphi, or anywhere that I have a good chance of getting accepted. Tuition is a factor, but if it comes down to it I'm willing to pay. I'm 23 years old and just want to start a nursing program already.

If anyone can suggest some advice and maybe point me in the right direction or offer some insight, please feel free. I don't know what the transferring process is like, or what credits transfer or if it's even worth it to take those pre reqs if the schools won't accept them when I transfer.

I say take the pre-reqs left and apply to multiple BSN programs. If your goal is to work in a hospital in NYC, most strongly prefer, if not require, a BSN. Generally a school will accept transfer credits if they meet a minimum grade, usually in the C range (could be C- to C+, depending on the school). Apply to many schools to increase your chances. Many of these schools require a standardized test like the TEAS, so if you do well that can work in your favor.

That chemistry grade is going to hold you back a little- I know that Adelphi and Molloy don't look at re-takes and nothing below a C will be accepted, so you can unfortunately knock those two off your list. Is your GPA a 3.7 in just the english, math, A&P requirement and your total GPA is a 2.9? I go to QCC and I love the program. Once you're in, you have the option of enrolling in a dual program so you can transfer straight into the BSN program when you're done with the ASN.

LIU Brooklyn will probably look at your application, York might require that you re-take chemistry with them.

I know you just want to get it over with, I was in your shoes 4 years ago; but I'm glad I chose the ASN route just because it's going to save me so much money in the long run.

Talk to the admissions offices for the bachelor's programs before throwing your money at applications that they might not even look at. Apply to the ones that say you can apply, and use the rest of the money for some associate's programs.

I'm already at Laguardia so going to QCC or another CC would just be going in a circle for me. I'd rather just reapply to Laguardia's program. I am going to do what you mentioned though, about reaching out to the admissions office of the other colleges. Thank you for your input!

I would say just apply to a bsn program.. even if you got into a cc program, you would still have to stay for two more years because most program require that you can only take one nursing class a semester. your young, buckle down get into those books apply for as many scholarships as you can when you get into a program..and of course sometimes all our credits don't transfer that the chances we take as we become transfer students... good luck!
