I have applied to Nassau Community College's Nursing Program for the third and final time. I have been declined two other times and if I get denied a third time I will not apply again. It is getting a little embarrassing that I keep on getting declined.

Their lose is another school's gain...

Kuklara,

Oh okay nice! I didn't receive my schedule yet, they said at orientation that if anyone didn't receive it yet you should be getting it any day now. I looked at someones schedule who had there schedule already and I know a few of the clinical sites were St. Catherines, St. Vincents, I believe?, and some medical centers out in riverhead because our campus is out east more. I forgot some of the other sites. So I'm assuming that they choose clinicals that are closer to your campus?

Hey Russl - How you been? Get your schedule yet?

is there someone out there that is willing to answer some questions regarding what exactly are the prereqs that are needed before applying to the nursing program at NCC. I have never been to college but i just applied at NCC. i have taken the placement test, didn't do so well with math.. its been 10+ years since i last stepped foot into a classroom..im due to go back in 1 & 1/2 apx weeks to register for classes and to meet with an advisor. the thing is.. even after taking this test i still have NO clue what I am about to get into! the staff would not answer my questions and said i have to wait to meet with an advisor. The only question that they asked me was , what major did i want? I said nursing.. so they said ok thats a liberal arts program with pre nursing?? I guess what i want to know is... if NCC is a 2 year school.. does that mean that i will need to take 2 years worth of pre reqs and thennn apply to the program? and if so then does that mean that it will be an additional 2 years in the nursing program? I'm all up for the challenge ( I think:confused:) but im just not clear on what I really need to do here. Oh and forgot to mention i planned on doing this part time? ugh i guess what i had originally thought was that everything will take me 2 years? but bc i have no credits under my belt and i guess that means i have no gpa??? im starting to get the feeling that im totally wrong in thinking this was a 2 year run? sorry im sure this may sound a bit "slow" but i have to admit im going into this totally blind folded. any feedback would help. One thing I do know is that i do want to do this with my life...Thanks~

Wrmotroni - I can answer your questions!

You are currently a liberal arts/science major because you are not considered to be a Nursing major until you are actually Accepted into the nursing program itself.

There are four classes you need to take before you can apply to the actual nursing program. Those four classes are: English Composition 1, Math Statistics, General Psychology, and Anatomy & Physiology I. Once those are taken you can apply. There are other classes however that you will need to take either before you get into the nursing program or while you are already inthe nursing program. *The more of these classes you have taken before applying the better your chances of getting into the program* The additional classes are: Anatomy & Physiology II, Medical Microbiology, English Composition II, Principles of Sociology, Lifespan Human Development, and 2 Electives from the Humanities Department.

Once you get into the actual Nursing Program from that point you will have 2 years left of School because the Nursing Program Is broken up into four semesters in which you focus on Actual nursing stuff, and going into the hospital for clinicals.

My advice to you: Take as many liberal arts classes you can before applying because it will better your chances. I applied to the program having 8 liberal arts classes total including the pre-requisites completed and I got accepted into the program the first time I applied.

I also was a part time student. I took 2 classes a night for two years before I applied into the program.

Another piece of Advice: The Science clases are really hard so when you take a science do not overload yourself with other classes. The grade you get on the sciences is also EXTREMELY important when they review your grades so try to get an A in those.

If you work full time which is why you are going only part time my advice is to take Anatomy & Physiology I by itself, because that class also has a lab and is very hard.

My advice also being you have no credits and you are new to college classed start out by taking ENglish 1 and General Psychology your first semester because those tend to be alittle easy (I thought) just to get back in the rhythm of school/studying.

Hope I answered all your questions, anything else let me know

Kuklara, I'm good just enjoying my summer, thanks for asking. One month today until my Nursing classes start Ahh!! Hope you're enjoying your summer before you start! Yes I did actually, my clinical for the first semester is at St. Charles it's further east LI. Can't wait. When do you start?

Hey - I start on Sept 1...I'm all excited/nervous at the same time - already making flashcards!

Thank you so very much for taking the time give me such detailed feedback... so.. am i looking at apx 4 years of part time schooling? its funny bc when I read about how hard these classes are it scares me half to death! I'm beyond terrified to learn that I am not "smart enough" to pass/get A's yet... I continue to grow so curious about it all, and not scared enough to change my mind... not yet :) thanks again!!

Honestly, I felt the same way especially after reading all these threads...but honestly for me it wasn't that bad because I paced myself and never took on more classes than I could handle. Yeah I would say about 4 years...maybe even less. Apply as soon as you complete the four pre-requisite classes. If you get in GREAT, if not just continue with the other liberal arts classes and keep applying every semester until you get in

thanks for everything. you've given me more info than the school has, or any other websites/blogs for that matter! i do have another question.. you suggested that i begin with english comp and general psychology, does that mean that I can choose my classes? i was under the impression that the adviser would tell me what I need to take first? i assumed the only say I would have wld be the # of classes I can handle at one time. I thought that i shld take math being that i am so behind in that department? but i will take your advice as long as they let me! I made some notes frm your feedback, ill take it with me to ask questions. thank you again and best of luck to you!

You make your own schedule. You choose which classes you want to take and what works best with your schedule. You can take as many classes as you want and whichever classes you want. They will tell you which classes you need to take that you will need to get into the nursing program (The classes that I told you). THen you will go online, check their availability and choose your classes.

I'm so glad to have this place to go and post! I haven't told any relatives, friends, etc. (except for my husband and my sister that I've applied. I don't want to share my disappointment if I don't make it this round.

I don't think anyone else would understand the anticipation, excitement and worry that I'm going thru -- except, of course, other's that are going thru it as well.

I guess it's so hard to wait, because I've wanted this all my life, but never had the opportunity to even attempt it. I'm from a large family, so college was not even an option. My workplace provided tuition reimbursement, but only towards a business degree. After working in NYC for 17 1/2 years (at 2 mostly terrible) jobs, I'm getting my chance to do WHAT I WANT TO DO!

I'm at the point of my life where I'm married and have 2 great boys. My mom died suddenly when my first child was 5 months old. I had my dad fall apart and lean on me (a very long story), then I found out I was expecting another baby when my first was 6 months old................the past years have been bittersweet, good, and crazy.

I feel like I've always done what everyone else wanted me to do. Deep down inside I always hoped the day would come when I could chase my dream of becoming a nurse.

To be honest, I'm humbled just to be able to apply. I never thought I'd get this far. I guess now that I've got all that out, I can wait a few more days.

Thanks for listening........even if you just read the 1st sentence and hit "delete".

Good luck to us all -- from my mouth to God's ears.love.png

Dibbs197 -hi there... ive been reading these posts and was inspired by what you wrote, but i didn't see any further updates? did you get into the program?? ( im new to this so maybe i over looked you somehow?)...

im a 32 year mom & have recently made the decision to go back to school -NCC and i am so nervous i cld cry! I am brand new with no credits nothing! but my goal is to get into their nursing program. I am beyond terrified bc all i keep reading and hearing is how hard it is (the classes, the hours of study the time away from family, the clinicals etc...) it becomes a little discouraging... but im taking it slow, getting back into the swing of school which by the way i was neverrrr an A student ( but that's a whole other story, shld have listened to my mom!) anyway.. if your out there.. i would love to hear how you are doing... thanks..
