New york going all BSN anytime soon?

A posting on the general discussion board was about how NY is talking about going "All-BSN" by 2015, with current ASN nurses (at that time) having 10 years to be 'grandfathered' in. Any truth to this?

There is a bill in Albany (BSN in Ten), that would make ADN/AAS grads complete their BSN degree within ten years of licensure. Provisions are made for some extensions (with grounds), but basically by 12 years or so post grad you would have to have wrapped things up.

Those already holding RN licensure, as well as graduate and student nurses (who are accepted/in school already), would be grand-fathered, anyone entering a nursing program afterwards would be subject to the new requirement. So in theory if the bill became law in December, the first class to be affected (if I read things correctly), would be Fall 2010.

You can Google "BSN in Ten" and that should take you where you need to go in terms of information.

Excluding any new laws from Albany, many NYC hospitals are looking to hire only BSN nurses already. North Shore-LIJ system which includes Staten Island Hospital and Lenox Hill stated to the media as of next year (cannot remember the exact date, but there is a thread here in the group about it), they will only hire BSN nurses. ADN/Diploma grads if hired would understand they have a few years to get their four year degree, or bye-bye.

If this is all about you considering what type of program to attend, my vote is for the BSN, provided your time and finances can deal. While going all BSN has been tried many times before, and more often than not failed, wiht hospitals having to hire ADN grads, this time may be different. For on there there are quite allot of experienced nurses out there (both ADN and BSN), and therefore few hospitals are hiring any new grads at the moment.
