This is my first travel assignment. I will be working at UCSF in San Francisco. Does anyone know of a safe decent place to stay? Hotel, room, extended stay, apt.? Thank you all ahead of time.

SF is a very expensive place to live. I would be very careful about Craigslist, the scammers are very active here. Try airbnb and vrbo. Keep an open mind - you might find it's not worth living in the city itself, and try some of the nearby towns.

Besides Craigslist, I would recommend going over to UCSF's housing dept across the street (or used to be) from the hospital. They have some public access (might be better after getting your ID) to housing availability by local landlords or roommate seekers. I differ from Dinsey's recommendation to look outside the city, it is worth paying extra to live local. Commutes can be brutal.

I used craigslist and looked for roommate situations. That being said, this city is the toughest when it comes to housing, and it's VERY competitive and expensive. I ended up needing to fly up from So Cal one weekend to meet roommates in person, even though I offered to FaceTime. They started the travelers at the same time, and a lot were in temporary situations (airbnb) and looked for places once they got here.

Beware of the scammers. If it sounds too good to be true, it IS. Don't transfer ANY money until you've set foot on the property. One traveller was scammed, even though she used PayPal and the other website that's similar to AirBnb (starts with a V).

I got into an amazing housing situation with two roommates and a dog :) who I play with on my days off. Roommate situations are the best when you're new to an area: think of it as instant new friends!
