hello everyone! i am new to travel/contract nursing and after turning down a handful of assignments that were offered, i finally feel like i chose the right one. just want to see if any of you experienced travelers think the contract i was offered sounds like it is worth the time.

i will be working 40 minutes from my home at a veteran's home. i don't need insurance or any of the housing or travel stipends. this is the offer i received:

13 week contract with a $500 completion bonus/$100 compliance bonus for turning paperwork in within 24 hours

$799.00 tax free weekly

$11.00 per hour taxed

i will be working five 8 hour shifts and will be paid for 37.5 hours.

the hours are 2:15pm until 10:45pm

i figure the total take home pay per week will be around $1175.00

i am currently working three 12 hours shifts at a local hospital on a stroke unit. i have been there for one year and am completely burned out:eek:. i do plan on staying at the hospital per diem just in case i don't end up with another assignment after this one ends.

any comments good:up: or bad:down: would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!! :lol2:

Big red flag here! If you are living at home and are within commuting distance of the contract you are NOT legally entitled to any "tax free" pay!

Please don't let a recruiter tell you that you are. Check with a tax professional who specializes in travel professionals before you accept this. I'd suggest at least starting by looking at the Travel Tax website.

This could end you up in a big mess with the IRS. Please be careful!

I agree with what Bagladyrn wrote. $11.00 an hour for nursing is not a reasonable wage you shouldn't take any less than what you are currently making at your other job. Pay your fair share of the taxes, hold out for a reasonable wage and make sure you know what you are signing in your contract. Be sure to ask for and read the "employee handbook" and all papers regarding stipends, perdiems and housing allotments.
