NEW TO NEURO ICU

Hi,

I'm starting Neuro ICU tonight. 3 1/2 years of nurse experience, foundation in neuro, and mixture of med/surg and pcu. Any pointers? What should I focus on? I'm a little nervous. Ultimate goal is to become a CRNA.

Thanks:nurse:

No problem! Definitely get some varied ICU experience and also your CCRN. It will make your application more competative and well rounded.

Good luck!

I'm sure that having a well rounded background helps alot in application to CRNA but I can tell you from my experience that every person I worked with in Neuro ICU was accepted to a very highly ranked CRNA program. Many of them had not worked in other units. Wondering if it depends on the unit itself and what kinds of experiences you will get that make the difference? I worked in a large university hospital that was a level I trauma center. Food for thought...

The neuro ICU I work in was ranked #12 this year in US News and World Report. The hospital is a level 1 trauma center, Magnet, and primary stroke center. We take care of very complex as well as rare neurological conditions. However (in my opinion), a well rounded advanced practice nurse should have more than one year of ICU experience, especially in an area that is not so specified to one patient population.
