Texas Nursing Bulletin for Oct. 2010 just came out with new requirement for all of your 20 hours of required CE per 2 year period are required to be in your area of practice or you must have certification in your area of practice. No more frivolous fluff you guys. This is the way we show competency in our state and the truth is too many nurses go online and do whatever cheap package they can find the week before their renewal is due. So, now they are making us look more carefully and what will help you grow and stay up to date in your practice. See http://www.bon.state.tx.us/about/pdfs/oct10.pdf for more details. Let's take it up a notch!

I support this change, however I anticipate some problems for those of us whose area of practice is not in direct patient care. It may be tough to locate sufficient nursing CE in areas like case management, performance improvement, education, etc. I predict that a lot of us are going to seek national certification instead. If so we should probably get cracking & not wait until the last minute like we do with CE credits.
