hello everyone! I am new here and i am currently waiting admission in to a 2year adn program. But i am alos taking A&P 1

i was wondering if 2 years is a long time for justa associate degree i have heard of shorter programs. Just curious

Oh my info is i am married mom of 3 boys ages 4, 2, and 6 months

Hi there and welcome to the BB!

No, 2 years is not a long time for an ADN. The RN programs are 2 years but the pre reqs take about 1-2 years (depending) You'll find that most of us have taken about 3 years begining to end.

2 years isn't a long time - the only shorter programs that I've heard of are usually accelerated/second degree. From what I hear around here, an ADN usually ends up taking around 3 years (with pre-reqs), and a BSN usually ends up taking 4+.

Aren't boys fun? We have a couple around our house too - ages 5 and 2. :)

i just wanted to say thanks fot the replys i was not sure i know a college near me offers a shoterd adn program but im not sure which to take i have also heard the college im attending has problems with courses tranferin and has a very low graduation rate im a little scared of what i am in for

Hi -

I'm new here too - married with 4 1/2 yr old girl and 3 yr old boy. Taking pre-req's for ADN program at local community college.

student_rn ...2 years is normal for ADN. Are you in the Chicago vicinity? Like all the other posts, depending on whether you take pre-req's f/t or p/t, it can take an additional 1-2 years.

For me it adds 2 years.

I work full time, but will be quitting late spring/early summer to be a stay at home mom and part time student. Very excited about being able to spend more time with my kids and get back to school! I won't be entering the nursing program for another 2 years as it will take me that long to complete my pre-req's.

Would love to hear from other mom/dad students who are in their 1st year of nursing school that can offer some tips for balancing EVERYTHING.....how difficult do you think it is having a family and finding time to study, etc.

Have a great day!

Specializes in LTC.

Hi all. I'm also a mom and a nursing student. My kids are 6, 7, 9. One boy sandwiched by his sisters.

I had taken some basics right out of high school, but I could really only use my English. It took me a year to get my Micro, A&P's, Math, and Psychology out of the way.

I waited until my kids were all in school full time before going back to my 2-yr RN program. I have been fortunate to be able to schedule my classes and clinicals for mornings while the kiddies are occupied. I do class and study time before they get home. Between 3pm and bedtime, schoolwork is off limits. Once they're in bed, I can focus on studies again. Having a loving, supportive husband has made this whole process much easier.

Good luck!!

Hi to both of the new posters!

I'm a mom of 4 sons! Ages 20, 19 and 7 year old twins!

I'm in my second semester of an ADN-RN program, having completed my prereqs already....I did these part-time and full-time in a three year span. When I finish (May 2005) I'll have put in five years of school.....and I've loved every minute of it!

I'm taking my A&P WITH my nursing courses. I took the first half last semester and am currently taking the last. As my instructor said, it's BEST to have it out of the way before coming into the actual nursing courses. They require a minimum of 20 hours study time per week. However, it CAN be done....just means even less sleep...haha.

Best of luck to both of you and Great to see you here!:)

Thanks for your replys.

I sometimes wonder where on earth I'm going to find the time for everything. I will be on a 4-5 year plan as well. Like I said, 2-3 yrs for pre-reqs..this way by the time I enter the NUR program, my son will be entering kindergarten. At least that's the plan right now.

AmyB and Catma63:

How did you find micro? I'm very nervous about it. Never had a strong chemistry or math background in high school (14 yrs ago)...I was considering taking a general biology course as a refresher before taking Micro? Also worried about dosage calculations/formulas, etc....would you recommend an algebra refresher if time allows or will I "re-learn" all that in NUR?

Let me know what you think....thanks all!

PS. I can deal with less sleep, but I'm seriously going to have to weed out some primetime TV shows that I watch!!!

:D
