New RN starting in ICU Question

Published

I'm a new RN in an ICU. I feel that I need to learn how to perform different procedures, like pulling chest tubes, hemodynamic monitoring, monitoring and using a ventilation machine, etc.

I've been looking for a good ICU procedure text/manual, like the AACN Procedural Manual for Critical Care Nurses, that gives step-by-step instructions. I like AACN's procedure manual, but it has two main draw backs for me; first, it's a little too expensive for the newer edition, and the 2005 edition is still a little pricey, seeing that it may be a little outdated. The second drawback is that it lacks any kind of visuals or online component with interactive media. I'm more of a visual learner.

Does anyone know of any reputable text(s) with some kind of multi-media component that would be worth investing in? If so, I would love to know. Thanks for you time.

Have you tried ebay?

With the new AACN Procedural manuel out old ones will probably be posted in time.

Canadian site has many posted.

Do you not have a preceptor? These are the types of procedure you need to perform and demonstrate competence in while on orientation. Also, many of these procedures you can find on you tube.

Specializes in Critical Care.

Just out of curiosity where are you working that allows nurses to pull chest tubes ? I've never worked anywhere, where they allowed an RN to pull them.

Nurses do at the facility I work at. We pull cts, cordis/swanz lines, a lines, pacer wires. Part of nursing duties, and all ya need is an order and training.

RNs in my unit extricate chest tubes as well. Not uncommon for our ICU
