New RN needing advice!!

Published

Hi everyone...I just passed my boards and now getting ready for the job hunt. I am taking an ACLS class and an IV Therapy class this week and was wondering if anyone can suggest any additional classes I should take so I can add them to my resume. Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated!

Congrats on passing the boards! Welcome to the profession! Are you paying for the ACLS class? I know on my unit the hospital pays for it, so it may be worthwhile to just hold off and let your employer pay the cost of the class. I think for us the cost would have been around $250-$300 for the 2 day class.

Yes, I am paying for the class on my own however I dont mind because my instructor told us to take the classes and get them on your resume as it may add a bonus for a job prospect but I just dont know what other classes I should take. Also, because I graduated with my Associates, I figure I need a few extras on my resume.

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

You can take an ECG class, PALS, NRP (all depending on what area you want to enter). I agree it's worth it to pay for it. If it means you can work sooner, you make up that cost in a day or two! :)

I could be wrong but I don't really think it'll matter (in terms of a hiring advantage) if you have those classes under your belt- you're still a new grad. It would probably be more beneficial to take ACLS/PALS after you've been working for a while because not only will they be much easier but you'll understand and grasp more information and be able to retain it since you have some concept of how to apply it in real life situations.... just my 2 cents- i'm a new grad RN in the PICU at a great hospital and I have not yet taken PALS but will within my first year
