new RN grad with extensive management experience...advice please

Published

I am single father starting my second career. My plan was to originally move into administration bc I have a BA in Business and 13 years of managing and developing employees in in the financial industry including many years in HR. I however fell in love with patient care. I live in the Tampa Bay area and was hoping someone could suggest some of the better hospitals in the area to work for (normally I don't worry about money bc I believe it will eventually come but as a single dad it's pretty important) With my qualifications including 3.67 GPA how can I maximize my value? I welcome any advice from experienced nurses. Thank you so much. I plan on getting my BSN within 1 year. Thank you!!

If you do a search of this website, you will see that the job market for new graduate nurses is particularly horrible right now. You will probably have to get very lucky to find any decent nursing job right now. So, be prepared to lower your expectations and take a job that might not be your ideal. Hopefully, things will improve in the next few years and more opportunities will open up.

Not living in your area of the country, I can't give you specific advice about possible employers, but someone will probably come along who can do that. My advice is to "cast your net" far and wide and be very flexible with what jobs you consider. Apply for many positions and keep your fingers crossed.

I don't live in Florida, but I suggest you become a CNA at a local hospital, since you can gain a lot of nursing experience. Hospitals like to see that on resumes as well when you start looking at jobs after graduation. That seems to be the case with new grad programs that I have read about on this board. Good luck!

Take a look into LTC and SNF. I work in an LTC, our DON is a BSN...she makes great money.

Of course you'll have to start as a floor nurse.

Isn't it great that experience anywhere but nursing turns out to be considered useless.
