I had to respond back to you since I'm going back home as well to get my CNA certs. I live in Memphis, TN right now. And the cost for the training is very high. You can go to the Westbank- Jefferson Parrish area and get the training for free at some of the Nursing homes and also they will pay for it along with giving you a job on contract. I just left New Orleans about 2 wks ago and my cousin had started a new job as a CNA at a nursing home on the Westbank, Gretna area... and she started off with 10/hr with no experience. So I wish you luck. I bet as far as agencies and hospitals the pay is even better. Who knows maybe we will run into each other. I hope to move back down there about Mid Feb early March. IF you need any other info hit me up. I'm 22 as well, wish you luck!

 I work at a nursing home in slidell. Although at this time we don't offer classes, Greenbriar offers classes-on the job training. you can find their number in the phone book. I am not a CNA but in human resources. recently i did a poll of nursing homes within a 50 mile radius and found that basically the base rate for a certified CNA is between $8 and $8.50 per hour. Some places offer shift differentials for week-end and night shifts. Once you are certified you have many options. Before Hurricane katrina, most CNA's were making less than $7 per hour. now only a year later it is basically over $8. I have a feeling that when minimum wage goes up that possibly the base rate will go up again.
I wish you good luck. it takes a special person to be a cna and it is very rewarding working with the residents.
Lutheran on Hayne has free training, but you only get paid 8/hr while training. A few months ago they were providing onsite housing I odn't know if they still are but ya'll may want to check.
