New to OR -need advice -arrogant rude surgeon

Published

Have been in OR for about 3 weeks as a circulator. Really do love it and the majority of the docs/surgeons are great. There is one that makes me feel completely inadequate and is just down right rude to me. I was in a hurry to get back to a pt and accidentally walked in front of him and he just stood there looking at me like I was stupid -I said excuse me -sorry and he says sarcastically excuse me! Another nurse saw the exchange and later said he was out of line. He also has little temper tantrums if things go wrong and somehow always manages to make me feel like it was my fault. I don't know if he does not realize how new I am or if he is just that much of an arrogant jerk! Any time I ask him a question-he just looks at me like I am stupid and won't answer. If the behavior continues w/him -what would be the best course of action? Confront him or go to my manager? Or just ignore till I build a rapir w/him?

Been in the O.R. for 24 yrs, worked in 5 hospitals, been thrown out twice. Once because I'd never scrubbed the case and asked a question. Second time, because my boss had me leave a new person with a crazy doc, he hated new people (she held her own).

Worked my way back into the docs rooms both times and made them want me there... MAhaha, my revenge!

Watch everything they do, learn what they like, remember, they are people too, I repeat, they are people too.

I was hugged by the crazy doc because he knows I care about my patients. The questioned Docs never wanted me to leave their cases.

I was told by 2 great instructors, Most important: Be yourself, introduce yourself to the doctor, pay attention to the surgery, read the preference cards (it's not social hour), and learn not to take everything personal. Have a backbone.

One day you will be there on call and they won't have a choice. It doesn't matter at 3 a.m. who's in the room. Learn as much as you can!

Sometimes we all have a bad day.

All good advice, There are times to stand up and times so let it go learning that is the hard part. Whatever you do don't leave just because they are upset, stick it out and you'll get more respect and have more fun.
