NEW NURSE STARTING

Published

Hello. I am a 20 year old girl wanted to get an LPN but I'm still deciding if I will apply to private school or a public school. I don't have any prior experience in nursing, only a Medical Office Assistant for months. I live in Surrey, B.C. and for private school, I'm trying to apply to Stenberg College. Is this a good school? How heavy is the workload and what is the acceptance rate in hospital/s once I finished my course? I am kind of confuse because this is my first time doing this and I wanted to make this better, not wasting my time. Can you also share some of your experiences while you are in school. Thank you.

Hi Bea04. I am an Lpn currently working in the med/surg unit. I’ve been an lpn for now 6 years going on 7th. Yes public school is a lot cheaper than private school but the wait year is maybe 3-5 years or more. I also contemplated that when I first started. I graduated from stenberg and can’t emphasize enough how prepared I was after I graduated. From the teachers to the clinical Stenberg prepared me well, I even got hired during my practicing placement and started working on an in-term license. I know the price for private school is hefty but think of it this way, the sooner you compete your education the sooner you make money and can pay it off without being on a wait list. I know stenberg has a great reputation with the health care facilities in the lower mainland and Fraser valley region. The work load is quite heavy. For the 2 years you won’t have a social life and you would need to concentrate on your work. I was a mom of 2 when I started the course and worked ( which I don’t reccomend), but if you put in the time, it isn’t too bad. Another bonus with stenberg is that is is accredited with Athabasca university. In the future if you do decide to upgrade to RN you can work and study at the same time. I’m currently doing that myself. If you have any other questions I am glad to help.
