New Nurse? Can I get a job in Informatics right away

Hey guys. I just graduated nursing school and I will be taking the nclex shortly. I wanted to know if I can get a job in informatics right away? I don't have a degree in IT but I'm really skilled with computers as I have learned to do a lot on my own. I know how to build websites, I know SQL, and some phython. In addition, I am an excellent speaker and I am very good at networking. The question I am trying to ask is, can I get a job in informatics right away. Secondly, can I get into any other area of a hospital position besides staff nurse while utilizing my BSN degree? Thoughts. Thank you in advance!

Specializes in Ortho.

No. You need to get some clinical experience. Most of these positions require a minimum of 5 years of bedside experience. I recommend getting at least 10 years of experience at the bedside and work as a nurse manager (i.e. higher level than charge nurse). It is very mentally taxing. All of my colleagues are on anti-anxiety meds because of it.

Specializes in informatics for 10 years.

Theoretically speaking, you could get a job in informatics without much nursing floor experience. It really has to do with the needs of the hospital and how many candidates they have in their area. I've met a few analysts who graduated as nurses and were offered informatics positions once they had their license. Possible? Sure. However, I would say the field is so competitive right now that maybe is not as easy as it used to be. But maybe in smaller town hospitals where the pool of candidates is small you might get lucky.
