New NPs

Published

I am an old RN and a new ANP/GNP graduate. I would like to hear from any new or recent NP graduates who are willing to share their experiences with finding that first job, negotiating salary and benefits, contracts, CPAs etc... Any sage NPs who want to throw in their words of wisdom pls share your advice as well.

I graduated in Aug. 08 and found my first job through doing clinicals at the place I wanted to work, networking, attending HIV specialty education, and being active in my local professional organization. After I felt I had some credibility I went to the clinic director (while still a student) and asked for a job. It was like a dream, but my wish was granted.

The whole hiring process was very transparent. The clinic director told me what the salary was for my position per the grant so I knew what to ask for (HR initially offered me less, but I knew their ceiling and raised them to it). My former preceptor is someone I can trust, so I asked her what I should know about benefits and contracts. It's been a very nice transition so far.

I graduated in May 06 and interviewed at a couple of places that I had clinicals also. However, I ended up taking a job which I found out about via my state's APN organization. I was initially offered a low figure which was actually less than I was making as an RN and ended up negotiating a $20k increase! Have been extremely happy with my pay and benefits.

I am fortunately interviewing a lot in the last couple of weeks but the jobs are very different. Have a hospitalist offer tomorrow, 3rd interview in pain medicine, an ER position and corporate wellness!! Hard to know what will be the best path. In this economy I think anyone with options is lucky!! A friend from my program with only a year of nursing experience has not had any calls.

Delilah - you are indeed lucky to have choices.

The headlines in my local paper are that the three big hospitals here are not going to be matching the 401(k) anymore and they are not paying tuition reimbursement, loan repayment and there is a hiring freeze.
