Well congratulations on the interviews. I too joined a specialty (nephrology) practice when I graduated and like you, had no experience whatsoever in that specialty. Some questions I was asked:
1. Since you have no experience in XYZ specialty, why should we hire you? I told them that my years of ER and ICU experience had honed my assessment skills and I was able to quickly determine whether a patient was sick or not so sick. I also emphasized my ability to think on my feet and that I was a quick study.
2. How much orientation are you expecting? Again, I told them that to be fair to the practice, the patients and myself, I would expect several months of orientation. Our orientation is 4-7 months in length.
Hope that helps. My docs were very blunt about my lack of nephrology experience.
A lot of places ask you the generic questions that are always asked, what is a challenge you overcome, when have you gone beyond your duty to help, ext. Specialty (from what I encountered will throw you some questions about the field. Before the interview look up the doctor find out more about the practice. Is the provider just GI or also a hepatologist? research procedures medications and guidelines to help get a basic knowledge base of the field so that you don't go in blindsided if they ask. lastly just be confident. You made it through school and through boards you know your stuff, now just present it. hope this helps

Some of the questions I received from interview for NP positions are "what are your expectations from the practice?", "How much to you want in terms of pay?". As a new grad, make sure you do your research and do NOT low ball yourself. Don't get desperate and take the first offer. I feel that many Docs think they can low ball you because you are a nurse, so go in prepared to ask for what you want in terms of money and benefits. GOOD LUCK!!

Hello everyone!!
I am a new NP grad and will have an interview with a GI practice on Wednesday. I have no experience in GI and it has been since May that I graduated. I am FNP certified. This interview would be my third one (first with a recruiter and second with a medical director of the practice) and I will be meeting with physicians for the practice. I am very nervous and don't know what to expect from this meeting. Does anyone know what kind of questions that are normally asked in this kind of meeting? I know I would be among two other candidates that would be met with the physicians before they make a selection. Thank you in advance for a kind answer.
