New to Nevada Nursing

Published

Hello all! I am a recent BSN graduate from Colorado State. I moved here with my spouse and we now live in Las Vegas. I am looking for a new grad training program. It is interesting to me that in a city of this size how hard it is to find an employer willing to train a new grad. There is opportunities for new grads all over, but I can't find them here. I dont want to relocate because we have a lot of family we like to be close to here. I have a good base of nursing knowledge, but we all know there is only so much you can learn in nursing school. I have applied to 4 hospitals and a home health agency and so far only the home health agency and Sunrise have been willing to talk to me. One hospital said they do not hire new grads. Its almost as if everyone wants you wrapped up in a little box fully trained having every credential under the sun, but you got to start somewhere.

I have found that with the people who have responded to me they say they do not post their new grad positions? They mention to me that to get one you have to dig as I have been doing? Kind of makes me leery? As a new grad coming here is there anything I should be leery or concerned about? I dont want to sign a contract with someone and then find a horrible working environment, politics gone mad, high staff turnovers? I also am leery about what to ask about these things and not ask in my interview.

I thought that coming here there would be a lot of nursing opportunities for new grads, but there isn't or I am just not looking in the right places. I dont want to have my being naive and new to the profession murder me with the first job I take. My last job as an LPN was a nightmare, high staff turnover, the politics were horrible, and I was in training and the saying "nurses eat their young" happened a lot! There is a lot of nursing jobs here, but they all want experience. Experience I want to gain!

Also I am prepping for state boards? any advice would be great. I am taking Kaplan just trying to do the best I can.

I took Kaplan & I also did practice questions from their CD, I used Mosby's Review Cards for NCLEX-RN, & I used the Saunders CD for practice questions. Also, check out the NCLEX forum on this site, it can be pretty helpful. When are you taking your test?

Good Luck on your interview at Spring Valley I hear it's a nice hospital. Keep us posted!

Hi there,

I am a new grad also; just got hired at Mountainview Hospital (mountainview is Sunrise's sister hospital)--they have a "rolling" hiring for new grads (not all at once, like the Valley hospitals) Valley hires new grads also.

If you haven't taken the NCLEX yet, I have 2 books I would be glad to sell you for $20 (I paid around $90 for them) All have CD's, no writing. I passed the NCLEX, 2 weeks ago, by studying from them, in 75 questions flat.

The Kaplan book is really good.

Good luck, keep us posted on your job search.

Hi! Well, I just got home from my interview at Spring Valley. It's a nice hospital. I interviewed for Med. Surg. There were 3 nurse managers present--one from each Med. Surg unit in the hospital (looked overwhelming, but really wasn't). First let me say that they put new grads through a 3 month orientation, which sounds like it may be quite a bit of classtime, in addition to floor time. Anyway, the last orientation class just started in June & the next one is not until September. I asked if one were offered a position there, could they start working before the September orientation class. I was told, "Well, I won't say no, but I cannot guarantee it, because it would be outside the frame of things." Ok. Along with the training course comes a 2 year contract to work for the hospital, more info regarding this can be obtained from the nurse recruiter, Tess at 702-894-5572. The hospitals of the Valley health system that do this training are Summerlin, Spring Valley, & Valley. Desert Springs is part of the Valley health system, but does not do that training. The ratios are 7:1 on days (may "in a rare case" get 8" & it's 8:1 on nights, again, may get up to 9 "on a rare occasion").

The floor is a mix of LPN's, RN's, & CNA's. The manager told me to pass this on, "When/if you interview, be prepared to answer the question: if you could be a kitchen appliance, what would you be, & why?" Oooookkkk.

I was told that they needed to interview others next Tuesday & Wednesday, then the recruiter would get back to me with their decision.

Mountainview...cool. That was my next place to apply. How long did it take them to get back to you & let you know that you were hired?

That is funny! I applied to Spring Valley and got an offer the next day from Tess. I really like it there. I thought that the interview was very professional and they had a good new grad program. Mountainview let me know as soon as I got my IP number, that they were offerieng me a job. I only wanted to work at Mountainview since I had worked there before as a pharmacy technician for 2 years. But, I hope you get an offer at Spring Valley, it seemed like a growing hospital, and a nice opportunity...By the way, which appliance did you say you were? I said a mortar and pestel...the questions they ask during the interview are interesting...

I said a range. If they offer me the position, I doubt I will take it because of the 2 year contract. The unit was very nice, & the managers were nice. My husband & I are planning to move once he finishes school, in May. Their ratios are much better than their sister hospital, Valley. I am taking faxing my application to Mountain View tomorrow. What unit do you work on?

It sounds as though your interview at Spring Valley went well! Keep us posted! Best wishes!

I'm new to this site, but decided to drop a note. I lived and worked as an ER nurse at Mountain View Hospital. Er's all over Vegas are usually at capacity with beds in hallways etc. However, they have a great CEO, Mark Howard, with an open door policy.

Before working at Mountain View, I worked for 1 day! at UMC ER! No training, not even a tour of the department! Where did they put me? TRIAGE!! I worked the day shift and came on at 7 a.m. By 10:00 they had a human resource person come and tell me that there was a mistake and my relocation expenses would not be reimbursed. Then my manager came by and told me that there had been a 'mistake' in my bonus and it would halved from what was agreed on. Then he asked me, "How's your day going? :angryfire At noon, the ER education person walked into triage slammed some documents on the counter and said, "Fill these out! And don't expect me to be your f------ babysitter!! At 7pm that night I told them all GOODBYE!!

That's when I was hired my Mountain View. It is busy. There are lots of patients. But I found the people of Vegas to have wonderful, colorful lives, that they would share with me. If you are a new grad, then God love you!! Keep looking for your dream! It's out there.

I had to move back to Colorado when my father and father-in-law were both stricken with terminal illnesses. I also decided to get my BSN while I was at it and I'm coming back to Vegas to work as a case manager. Can anybody give me some advice on the Case managment scene? I know Sunrise has 11 open jobs...that makes me nervous. Kate

I got the job at Spring Valley. It's 7am-7pm (which is what I wanted...I think). I hope that shift isn't too crazy. I filled out my pre-employment paperwork today. The bonus is nice, with no contract for employment with the hospital.
