Hi my name is candice. I'm from manhattan and I moved away to maryland and now I'm soooooooooo homesick :crying2: . So I'm moving back to nyc next August. I want to begin my nursing career when i finally do get back; the only thing is my brother checked out the nursing programs at CUNY and he says there's a crazy waiting list like 2-3 years!! Ya gotta be kiddin me!!!! That's way too long for me. So I've devised a little plan for getting back to NY and starting my nursing career and I'm looking for some frank feedback. So here is my PLAN:

1. I plan on taking a CNA course so that I can support myself and gain some experience while working on my RN. A friend and I will be living together when I move back so some of my expenses will be a little lower.

2. Then after I get the cna I plan on taking the nursing pre-reqs like anatomy 1 and 2 at BCC, laguardia or some other communty college so I can transfer them over to a private nursing school like Beth Israel or Cochran. I'm willing to pay the extra for the private school because I just really want to get into nursing and I really don't feel like waiting forever with CUNY schools.

So that 's my plan. I'm 24 and I just feel like I've wasted a lot of time and I just want to get started as soon as I can when I do get back to ny. Your feedback will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Candice, welcome to the great family of allnurses. I think you have not wasted time, I am about your same age and used to think that as well, but looking at so many other people who go back to school at different ages, has taught me that you are never too old or young to continue your education.

Yes, there are lots of schools with insane waiting lists. I too wish it wasn't like that.

I think you have wonderful plans. You know what you want and now you just have to work in getting there. If I were in your shoes.....I believe that is the same thing I would do. Get my CNA to support myself while in school and gaining valuable experience as well. You definitely have a vision and you will succeed.

I am a pre-nursing student starting my clinicals in Jan. I am not in your area, but feel free to PM if you have any questions or just to talk sometime.

Have a wonderful day. :icon_hug:

Sounds like a good plan. You're still very young. Don't worry about the time you think you've wasted. You'll be about 28 or 29 when you get out. I'm 30 and will be 32 when I finish! So I'm the old one! Best of luck to you:)
