Its been a month since Ive passed my NCLEX and got my license! I worked so hard and was soooo excited to get my first job.....only problem is I cant find one!! There are tons of job listings ..but they all want experience...how do they expect us to get experience if they wont give us a chance?! I dont really want to do home health, Id rather work in a clinical or acute setting and really get some good experience in so I can reach my goal of BSN and working in L&D or postpartum! any suggestions???

Nursing Homes will usually give you a chance and there's a lot of turnover. It's where I am now and it's my first job out of nursing school

I dont really want to do home health
As an inexperienced LVN in an area where you're competing for employment with thousands of other unemployed LVNs, you cannot afford to be choosy or turn your nose up at any opportunities, including home health. The nursing job market is really hellish in southern CA due to the overall state of the economy, and it is even worse if you're an LVN new grad. Therefore, if you find any job in healthcare, I urge you to accept the position. If you remain too selective, you might very well be unemployed for more than one year while passing up home health jobs that you do not want.
Specializes in A little bit of this and that.

Find a place that has long term along with sub acute in it, so that way they will accept you in long term, work your way up to sub acute, then get the hell out!

Thanks I will definately apply at the long term care facilities! and Its not that Im turning my nose up at home health I just was told it was dangerous for your first job because youre on your own and you dont have the other nursing staff around you to train you and help you out...thats just what Ive been told!

If you're looking to de-stress some from nursing school I suggest working at a dr office. You'll still get some experience. I did that and sooooooooo glad I did. If I would've went str8 to the hospital or LTC from school I would've pulled my hair out. I went to a peds office. I still feel it was the best decision I made.

Home health is good to go into. I've been told places won't hire you untill you have at least a year on med-surg

I had the same problem as you did. I went on several interviews with no luck. Just apply everywhere. You might have to take a shift you dont want, or low pay...but if someone is willing to give you a chance then for sure take it! I just got hired at a LTC facility about 50 miles south of where I live. Its a bit of a drive, but thats okay. You might have to settle for something like that until you get your first year in. It was EXACTLY one month from the day I got licensed to the day I was offered the job.

I need help! I've had my LVN license for one year. I've been a medical assistant for 15 yrs. I decided to work as an M.A. at a medical group hoping to be able to stay as an LVN (TEMP) AFTER ONE YR I was told that their policy does not allow them to hire without experience. I applied to another medical group and was also rejected. I graduated as an M.A. in the 80's when you did not have to be certified by the state as a phlebotomist. Now they are asking me for experience as a phlebotomist if I want to at least work as an M.A., and don't have experience to work as an LVN either? I am scared to work in a convalescent home or home health because I don't want to be by myself and they want experience. I live in California. If there is anyone out there that can tell me who or where they would hire me without experience I would really APPRECIATE!! I'm desperate:confused:

Looks like we r all in the same boat... Unfortunately! I'm from the Los Angeles area and I'm a new grad LVN looking for work out here is tough! No one will hire u without the experience..but how are we suppose to get it, If they won't give us a chance!?? Really frustrating!! :(

I don't know what your area is like or where you're willing to work, but a lot of people from my graduating LPN class were able to quickly get jobs at ped offices. Nursing homes also seemed more receptive to recent grads than hospital/specialty areas. I realize those might not be dream jobs, but something to keep your head above water, and crazy as it sounds, some places will hire those who are currently employed over those who aren't working. Just a thought. Good luck in your search!
