New LVN applying as a nurse tech at a hospital, any advice?

Published

I recently moved to CA from WA. I graduated from my program in August. I was a CNA for 2.5 years before and while in my LVN program. The job market is very tough for LVNs in CA. I applied for a nurse tech on a mother-baby unit in a hospital and I'd Really love to have that job. I was interviewed a month ago at the same hospital for nurse tech on a different unit but they said I worked to hard in school to have the position. Basically telling me I was over qualified. How do I convince them in an interview that they should give me this job?

I honestly don't know how you're going to convince an interviewer that you intend to stick around to work a patient care tech job and receive CNA wages while you have a nursing license in your back pocket. That's their biggest fear...

They really do not want to spend the money to hire, train, orient and retain a new employee who might resign as soon as a suitable licensed nursing job becomes available. They fear you will not stick around long enough to produce a return on their potential investment in you.

As a tech, you would not using any of the nursing skills that you acquired in LPN school. In other words, your LPN license would mean absolutely nothing in that you could not work to the scope of the same.
