Hello Out There.. Could Someone Please Give Me Some Personal Advice/opinions On How Long They Think An Orientation Program Should Be For A High Risk 100+ Babies Per Week Teaching Hospital For A New Grad In Labor And Delivery...?

Thank You For Your Help!!

Specializes in L&D, PACU.

Ours is six months, but that includes the regular orientation as well

Thanks... I Am On The East Coast. University Of Penn. Health System... 12 Weeks... Now I Am To Go In Front Of My Nm On Tues. Because My Preceptor Doesn't Feel She Could "let Me Loose" Yet... I Am Overwhelmed.. 12 H Shifts Rotating.. And We Only Use 1 Nurse In The Or For Mom/baby. That Nurse Needs To Circulate, Take Care Of Mom, Stablize, Id Baby. Help Clean Up Mom Then Recover Her In Our Pacu, Call Report For Both And Then Transport Baby.... I Think I May Be Reaching Insanity.. And I Feel Like I Just Received A Big Fat F On A Final!!!

I don't think 12 weeks is long enough. I think 16 is about right. I only got 7 weeks with 3 years experience none of it in L&D. I got the heck out of it after 5 weeks of orientation and not one day in the OR to date. Not safe! L&D is like no other kind of nursing. You can have 20 years ICU experience and need a ton of orientation in L&D.

Specializes in Obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry.

I'm from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

I'm new at L&D and i've been given a 13 days training before i was let loose on the floor.... I'm going crazy!!!! I have 3 years experience in post-partum and NICU but L&D is so different. I just wish i had 6 months training, i would feel much more confortable...
