First day was today and I absolutely LOVE IT!!!! Definitely a different field, lots to see and learn and do. Gonna take a bit to get used to but it's definitely a good change

thanks for the update. do they have a good orientation period? are you an RN or LPN?What shift do you work? and are they 12 hour shifts or 8 hours? I have questions too. I work for an agency and they are sending me for orientation in a corrections faciltiy on Sunday. I am nervous but very excited to be doing something different. I've been working in a physcian's office for the past 25 years and I work for the agencies on the weekend. I have very little experience in LTC and about 2 years hospice continuous care experience through the agency. I'm IV certified but never start IV's were I work. I am proficient in phlebotomy and lab procedures and testing. I have a lot of physician office experience. But I'm scared because I always feel I don't "know enough". Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Well idl what facility ur going to but the facility I'm at is a clinic at the MDOC and it's basically like a Physcians office :) but with inmates. We do VS, and routine care and if we need a physcian we hav like 10 on site we just discuss the situation and then provide the care. We hav MA's who do a BP clinic and a lab who draws the blood we also hav a hospital on site for more major problems. It's not bad at all. Don't be afraid to ask questions and always b aware of ur surroundings, never get personal or friendly w inmates u are their nurse nothing more. I hav Ony been there 4 days but that's what I hav noticed so far

I am an RN and the online orientation was 3 days the on site training will b 6weeks+ depending on how comfortable we r after the 6weeks. And I will definitely email you :)

So far I hav been here for 4 days and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!! I hav learned a TON so far. It's a lot like a Physcians office, but with inmates. Feel completely comfortable with my co workers and providing care to the inmates. Always remember ur their nurse nothing more don't be friendly or personal EVER. Always b aware of ur surroundings as well. So far it's a GREAT career change for me:) definitely worth the change of pace

These posts are encouraging, but my orientation will be only one day. I'm not sure what kind of situation it is yet, but it is a state prison. I'll be sure to check in here after my orientation though. I think one of the things I'm concerned about is my age. I'm 61 and I'm probably not as energetic as a younger nurse, although I can pretty much keep up with them in the clinical setting. I just wonder if I will get negativity because of my age and lack of experience outside the physican's office. I've worked with doctors since I was 16 years old so that doesn't bother me. I rarely get upset or shook up about anything but this will be a different environment. I know when I was working in hospice I was too personally and emotionally attached to the patient. It was not good for me emotionally. I am kind of relieved that won't be a problem in corrections and that I don't have to be personal or friendly.

So far so good still amazingly happy with my career change for sure :) meeting a lot of new people and getting to know the docs a lot better, learning the EMR system pretty, and starting to get the hang of things :) still not ready to b on my own but definitely gettin closer and more comfortable with things
