New to the idea of nursing

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all,

I am brand new to the idea of nursing. Was a pre-pharmacy student but just did not want to follow through with it. Anyhow i have taken Anatomy 1 & 2, Microbiology, Chem 1&2 currently retaking orgo and taking physics right now. I was wondering does it matter if pre-req classes are taken online? I wanted to take Nutrition and a Develop psych class online next semester. I looked at most of the school websites in NJ and none of them mention that online pre-reqs are not valid. And also i am having a hard time finding a school that teaches a medical ethics class in NJ. please let me know if anyone knows any. Thanks.

Hey ayshiiii!

I'm currently in the Rutgers Accelerated BSN program and I took several online classes including nutrition, chemistry lecture, developmental psych and a computer course. With the merger of Rutgers and UMDNJ, however, this may have changed. I'm in the original Rutgers program and they allowed some online classes. I'm not sure if UMDNJ is the same and Rutgers is adopting the UMDNJ prerequisites (which really makes me mad! I did so many more prereq's than students who are now getting the same exact degree I am! Anyway, that's for another post...)

Definitely call the admissions office at the schools you are applying to because they all accept different courses. For example, Rutgers wouldn't accept Developmental Psych (in person) from Ramapo but did accept Developmental Psych (online) from RVCC. NJTransfer.com is a great site that allows you to see which classes a program accepts, but it is better to call or speak to someone is person.

Hope this helps!

My dad really wanted me to do pharmacy. I've been working at Walgreens for 6 years not and it's just not something i see myself doing forever. I love helping people and think that Nursing would be something that i would enjoy.

And i plan on doing that looking at all the colleges that have the least pre-reqs i only have to take i think two or three more classes nutrition and developmental psych- lifespan and medical ethics so im planning on taking them all in the spring semester.

Thanks i am going to look into the Rutgers Accelerated BSN. Do you mind me asking what your gpa was when you applied?

When I applied to UMDNJ in 2010 they accepted everyone that applied as long as your previous degree's GPA was at least 3.0 and you passed all your required prerequisites. I was already a Rutgers, New Brunswick alum (graduated in '06) but UMDNJ had the least prereqs and also admitted students 3 times per school year: Winter, Summer, and Fall cohorts. Rutger's ABSN program had too much requirements and I believed only enrolled students once a year. At UMDNJ, if you didn't get into the cohort you applied to due to it being full, you were guaranteed a spot in the next cohort. That happened to me and instead of starting in September '10 for their Fall semester, I started in Jan 2011. I have heard things have changed now that Rutgers bought UMDNJ and I do hope for the better because there was so much disorganization in Admissions and in the program as a whole. You had to apply very early because many people are going back to school for nursing. Good luck.
