New Graduate opportunities in Houston, Texas

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hello all,

I would like to relocate to Houston. It is my last semester of nursing school and I will be working as a nurse tech in Maryland. After taking my boards, I would like to do a new graduate internship in Houston. Does anyone know of any?? Would anyone care to recommend some good hospitals?

Also, what is the rate of pay for Texas Nurses? Is it comparable to the Northeastern States? After a year of experience, can I make $30-$40/ hour with an agency in Houston, Texas?

thanks kindly

I wanted to move to Houston as well. The average starting out is 22.85 at some of the university hospitals...35.00 for weekenders...not sure about agency...but I am guessing 30-40/hr.

New grad internships begin in in the Houston metro hospitals every January and June.

They start looking at applications and interviewing November-ish for the January internship. You can get hired at any time but it's much easier to get into a specialty like ICU,L&D, OR, etc. if you start during an internship.

I missed the January deadline for new grads and SICU, which is what I wanted, wasn't hiring new grads until the next class in June and I couldn't wait that long. Luckily, MICU picked me up instead.

I started at about $23/hour in early 2004 and my hospital is considered to be on the low end compared to Houston area hospitals.

The agency nurses I've worked with do seem to report the $30-40/hr range.

Agency nurses will make more, but the agencies probably are NOT taking out any taxes. This means that while you may make $28-30/hr for a RN position (which is avg for a new nurse), they might be making 35/hr for the same job. Don't be fooled, they make just as much as you do, they just have to keep up with their taxes and pay some of it back at the end of the year :-)
