New graduate.... I need advice :)

Published

So i'm a new graduate from Oklahoma. I just applied to the florida state of boards and waiting on my letter so i can schedule my examination. I guess i'm confused because It will be a few more weeks before I can take my exam, but I want to secure a job as well. I know in Oklahoma some of the facilities would hire you and you could work before you took the nclex as long as you did and passed within ~3 months. Can you do that at any of facilities here in Florida? I know there are some jobs that hire new grads, but they want them to already have passed the exam. Also I know in Oklahoma some facilities would hire you before the nclex, but you would start work after you took and passed the nclex. I'm just curious are all the facilities here requiring you to have the test passed first? I just rather know I would have a job secured after the nclex.

Thank you guys! I find the best information on this site!

The nursing job market in Oklahoma is much, much more stable than it is in Florida. You might not be able to secure employment in many parts of Florida until several months after you have passed NCLEX due to the fierce competition for jobs. There is no nursing shortage in Florida. I know I am being blunt, but candy-coating the situation will not help. Good luck to you!

Seconded. Unless you have to move (family) or you already have a job the Florida market is horrible for even experienced nurses.

Unless you were a tech, I don't know of any hospital that will hire you before you have a Florida license number in hand. Is there a reason you don't want to take the NCLEX in OK?

Ok, so I'm way off topic and borderline stalking right now LOL (can't message yet). but I have a question for "TheCommuter"... I was reading other posts about Healthsouth, and found out you currently work there, well I have just been offered a position there today ( a new grad) going for 22.50.. Do you think this pay is reasonable and would it be arrogant to try to negotiate for more? ... If its ok to "haggle", any suggestions on how should I go about it?..... I would SUPER appreciate a response when you can :) THANKS!!

If you do try to negotiate, it will be at your own risk. Companies use a pay grid to determine your starting wage and, in this sluggish economy, they have no reason to deviate from their offer. As a new grad, you do not really have any bargaining chips. If you do not accept whatever they offer you, I can assure you there's 100+ new grads who will take the job at virtually any rate of pay with no questions asked.

Thank you soo much for the honest answer!! I really appreciate it.. I will be accepting the offer as is :) I definitely don't want to lose the opportunity. :)
