New graduate - considering moving outside Canada

Published

Hi,

Well, I have been applying for several jobs in Ontario since September. However, I haven’t yet receive any call backs. So, I got interested looking into working in US. I found out they offer new grad residency program for nurses. I was wondering, does anyone know whether they accept or at least consider new grad from Canada in their residency program?

Thank you!

I have read other posting that US does offer residency program to new grads. It really depends if you applied to such position. Where do you want to apply? Visit the upcoming Marskell Group Career Fair in Toronto at the end of this month. Both US and Canadian employers are present. Google.

I did the RPN - RN pathway. 3 years RPN experience (2 yrs at retirement home & 1 year at acute medical/surgical). I finished my RN program last Dec 2018 but graduated this June 2019.

I just arrived in Maine via TN status from Ontario. Waiting for my start date. My recruiter suggested a residency program but I felt like I do not need it because of the homework attached to it.

Michigan's BON application seems to be straightforward. I got my license within 2 months. But I did not end up in Michigan. It's my 2nd option. I got my Nova Scotia registration as well just so I have some choices lol.

Thank you for your reply! I was just really curious and interested on the residency program. I actually found out about Marskell Group Career Fair here on allnurses, and I am planning to go ?.On that note, by any chance, were you interview on the spot during the career fair, phone interview, or do you have to go to a different place for personal interview? And please, do you have any advices or what to expect on the job fair? Thank you once again! ? ? I hope you have a great time in Maine!~

Before the career fair, I emailed the recruiter of the hospital I wanted to apply to. They asked me to go on their website and choose a position & submit an application. The recruiter then pre-interviewed me as in friendly chat (nonformal) on the phone, asking my interests, asking about my resume, & what not.

During the career fair, I met the exhibitor just to show myself lol. It is not the real interview, again friendly chat. Then, they gave me option either to fly me to the hospital (covered expenses) or do telephone interview. I preffered telephone that time since I needed a decision right away, I have another job offer pending. My recruiter called me to set - up a phone interview with the manager of the unit I applied to. I got the conditional offer this March even before getting my Visa Screen, Graduation, BON letter for licensure. But I did pass NCLEX by February.

On the career fair, just bring your resume, lots of copies to give to potential employers. Some might interview you on the spot. But again, most of them are recruiters and not hiring managers.

I’m a Canadian nurse who left Ontario back in 2016. I was not a bee grad, but there are hospitals all over the USA that will take new grads and enroll to in the grad program . Good luck
