New grad wants nursing job across country...will this help?

Published

Hey all, I'll be graduating in May 2014 with my ASN in my current state (we'll use NY for example). I really want to relocate / get a job in a far away state (we'll say Texas).

I was considering sending out emails to some appealing hospitals in Texas just to introduce myself to the recruiter, explain my interest in their hospital, why I like that particular hospital, and whatever else. I was going to do this in December (give or take)

Just a short and sweet introduction so I will have something to remind them about when (IF) May comes along.

I have had asked multiple people for advice, and have gotten multiple answers .

Some people say its a good idea, and it can't hurt, while others say don't bother.

Do you think this will help me at all?

(I have a somewhat decent resume, PCT work in a hospital for 3+ years (when I graduate), Tutoring Med Surg, volunteer experience with a local medical corps.)

I want them to understand that i'm not just sending out a million hail mary applications, and really have interest in their particular facility.

You're on the right track - communicating interest in that particular employer. But in areas where there is a huge surplus of new grads, potential employers are unlikely to take you seriously unless you are licensed & 'good to go' in their area - able to be on site to begin work within a relatively short time frame.

It couldn't hurt. But like HouTx said, you won't be as strong of a candidate as one that is currently in TX and licensed.

If you're serious about moving to TX (or whatever state), getting TX endorsement may help improve your chances. You don't need to be living in a state in order to get licensed in it--I got my CA license several months before arriving here.
