New Grad want to become hemodialysis nurse..

Published

My professor told me I should start as a medical surgical nurse first before going to dialysis to develop my critical thinking skills. For me it doesn't make sense and also a waste of time. My plan is to take dialysis tech course or to start applying for hemodialysis nurse. What do you think guys, any advice? thanks

Your professor is correct!!!!

Specializes in Dialysis (acute & chronic).

I totally agree with your professor. You need to have some nursing background before venturing into dialysis.

Specializes in Dialysis.

I graduated nursing school on a Friday and interviewed for a dialysis job the following Monday and got the job. I am a hemodialysis RN in a chronic clinic. With all the training I have been given I feel perfectly fine not having the med-surg experience that most people say that you need. If you want to go into a speciality, then do it! Dialysis is hard, but a new grad can do it! I say go for it!!

I am also going to apply as a hemodialysis nurse as soon as I graduate from nursing school. Right now I work as a CNA at a medical center and the center has a dialysis unit. As soon as I graduate I am planning to apply for a job and luckily for me they hire new grads. I have always had problems with my kidneys because of my diabetes and I have a genetic disorder that affects my kidneys as well. The way I see it is, its only natural for me to want to help others who are going through what I have gone through in the past. Nephrology has always interested me and I don't see myself wanting to work in any other nursing speciality for a long time. I know a lot of dialysis nurses who say they love their job and wouldn't want to do anything else.
