New Grad with a tough decision..help!

Published

Hi everyone, So I recently graduated in May 2011, and got my license in June. I've been job hunting ever since and still no job. I've had one interview in which I didn't get the job. I recently had a few interviews, one was for a job but I have not heard from them (it has almost been a month), another one was for a GN internship which was the first part of the interview, and I have to wait till Mid November to hear if I will get a second interview with the unit manager. The other interview I have was in another city. After the interview, I was called by the recruiter asking if I was interested in that job, meaning I would have to move. The thing is I have never been on my own before, so if I were to move its a really big step for me. :uhoh3:

My question is, do I take this job and move? Or do I wait for the other jobs to call me? The one at the other city requires a 1.5 year commitment.

Any advice would help, thanks. :redbeathe

Hey! I think I PM'd you but I'm in the same boat as you! I have a couple of applications (and interviews) that are waiting to happen during the end of November, but I also have an offer that has come in. For me, I would take the offer, only because right now jobs are SO SCARCE, and new grad programs are getting more competitive. This is not to say that you still can't try and be hopeful for the other new grad positions. It's just that interviews and potential interviews are not as permanent as an "offer." But moving is a completely different thing...I would weigh the pros and cons, and google about moving tips, or even about if its "right for you." (I did that :p)

And also, after experience, you can always transfer closer to home. Or maybe even go to a Master's school.. It's just that "one year experience" that us new grads are having problems with..so for me it is important to achieve that experience! I don't want to waste my nursing skills. (i graduated in May 2011, been searching for 5 months).

Good luck!

Do it. No one ever achieved greatness by saying "Oh I'll play it safe". And ^ has a point.

An interview does not mean you have a job. Take the sure thing and experience something new.

Best of luck!

Thanks guys! I took the job! Moving to another city on my own and experiencing something new:)!

Specializes in Medicine.

Congratulations!!! I hope everything goes well

Specializes in on the fence about nursing.

Before I became interested in nursing, I was a teacher. I pushed myself to become licensed in three states. I wound up teaching in NJ, PA, and in NC. Of anything else, I remember all of my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade 'kids' who are now probably off living productive lives. Your post reminded me of all the times when I had to change jobs, sending out the resumes, the worry and frustration of not knowing, the well, thrill of victory, and of course, the agony of defeat. This is life. It is a journey...it is not a destination...you only get this one shot...enjoy!
