New grad touble getting a job---good alternative to hosptial to start?

Hi everyone,

So it's no surprise I'm a new grad having trouble finding a hospital job....eeeveryone wants experience. It's the new grad blues! :cry: I'm open to expanding my search outside of just hospitals but I really want to work somewhere where I will gain the closest experience to an acute care setting (ivs, blood work, trachs, wound care, feeding tubes etc). What types of medical facilities do you all recommend I expand my job search to? What non-hospital facilities best preserve our nursing skills or are most similar to acute care?

Maybe try a long term acute care hospital facility. Places like Kindred healthcare. Not sure where you live but there are bound to be facilities such as that nearby. Also maybe dialysis center. Just a few I can think of off hand

Long term care facilities are always looking for help. They can be a great place to start. LTC's have come a long way and now many of these facilities have sub-acute units or transitional care units that will give you the experience you are looking for. You might start on an overnight shift working on the LTC side of the facility, but, have patience because you will get over to the sub-acute & transitional care units.

Also, another great start for a new grad are rehabilitation hospitals. Rehabilitation nursing is med/surg nursing that is specialized in rehab. You will see trachs, IVs, blood transfusions, foleys, the works. Check into these facilities too.

It is frustrating. We've all been there. Then when you get the experience you will hit a wall again because the hospitals will be looking for "acute" care experience. But the biggest part of landing a job is persistance and never give up. Get your experience wherever you can find it. Stay there for a year or two and then you will get your job at the hospital.

Look into a hosputal that has a new grad residency program. I went through on and its probably the best thing I did for my career.

Im in this situation now... I understand that it gets frustrating at times... I have been with my facility sub acute setting for over a yr.. I have been applying to every hosp in Philly area.. I just hope I will get something real soon...

I'm in the tri-state area of philadelphia...which facility do you work at if you don't mind me asking? I need an idea of what type of facilities are hiring new grads!

I quit after 30 days. Correction takes a certain mindset and mentality to preform the job.

I don't have it, nor do I won't to acquire or develop it either.

I'm surprise because I have trouble finding job. I'm a new RN license but I have more than twenty five years of experience out of USA. I have experience in mental health and public health.I worked for several years with mental illness homeless population.I also worked in palliative Care and hospice.
