Hi everyone, just curious to see where everyone is headed after nursing school. I'm currently applying to new grad programs, but there dont seem to be too much open at this time. Im thinking of starting with skilled nursing to get that 1 year experience out of the way.
However, I'm just curious, if you get hired as an RN at a hospital (not through a new grad program), will they still give you orientation or expect you to start working independently

Hi newgradRN. I am a new grad as well, and I was able to get an offer from one of the local teaching hospitals. Just be patient, and go to as many interviews as you can.
As far orientation, I'm pretty sure all hospitals will give you a thorough orientation. Nursing homes on the other hand, will probably only offer a very short orientation (I've heard if some offering only 3 days).

You will still get orientation, but typically a much shorter one. There's often some wiggle room, though. I've been part of a group of new hires a few times and we all came off orientation at different times based on when we seemed and felt ready.
I've been on orientation for 3-4 months (as a new grad), 5-6 shifts (as a nurse with some experience), and just one shift at my latest job- they kicked me off pretty quickly.

Depending on the unit. If it's general medical you would do a few training shifts then be on your own with the assumption staff would help you if you run into any questions or need assistance.
More specialized areas have longer training both in class and on the floor.
New grad would be the most optimal situation for a new grad.
